Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay conducted his inaugural meeting to evaluate the law and order situation in the state on May 10. This meeting took place at the Secretariat in Chennai, shortly after he was sworn in as the 13th Chief Minister. The gathering included several high-ranking officials, showcasing the importance of addressing security issues in the state.

Among those in attendance were Chief Secretary M Saikumar, Additional Chief Secretary K Manivasan, and Director General of Police Sandeep Rai Rathore. Other senior officials involved included Principal Secretary of the Public Department Rita Harish Thakkar and G Lakshmi Priya, Secretary to the Chief Minister.

Governor Arlekar administered the oath of office to Vijay and his cabinet at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai, marking a significant moment in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape following a historic electoral victory for the TVK party.

Vijay’s Vision for Governance

Upon taking office, Chief Minister Vijay expressed gratitude to the citizens of Tamil Nadu for their support and trust. He articulated his vision for a “new era” in governance, centred on principles of secularism and social justice. He encouraged collaboration among the people to foster a new government that prioritises these ideals.

During his address, Vijay emphasised the importance of transparency in governance, asserting that his administration would operate openly. He specifically mentioned intentions to release a white paper detailing the state’s financial situation, which he claimed had deteriorated under the previous DMK government. Vijay criticised the prior administration for leaving the treasury depleted, alleging substantial debts exceeding Rs 10 lakh crore.

Vijay promised that his government would prioritise the effective utilisation of public funds, focusing on essential services such as education, infrastructure, and drinking water. He acknowledged the need for time to fulfil his commitments while reiterating the importance of a transparent approach in his leadership.

Initial Steps Towards Implementation

During the meeting, Vijay took immediate action by signing documents that initiated several welfare measures. These included a provision for 200 units of free power supply and the establishment of Special Task Forces aimed at combating drug-related issues and enhancing women’s safety throughout the state.

The recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections represented a pivotal moment in the state’s political dynamics, with the TVK party capturing 108 seats in its initial election. This outcome has effectively ended the long-standing dominance of the DMK and AIADMK party systems.

Vijay, who is widely known by his moniker ‘Thalapathy’, has drawn comparisons to former Chief Minister and iconic actor MG Ramachandran. His recent rise in politics signals a possible shift in the cultural and political fabric of Tamil Nadu, as he continues to navigate the challenges of governance in his new role.
