Over 1,000 springs mapped in Manipur; 173 critical sources marked for revival

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a significant step towards water conservation and ecological restoration, Manipur’s Directorate of Environment and Climate Change (DoECC) has mapped more than 1,000 springs across the state, identifying 173 critical springs in Ukhrul and Noney districts for revival under a priority scheme.

The development was announced by Principal Secretary (Forest, Environment and Climate Change) Arun Kumar Sinha during the release of the Environment Calendar 2026 at Porompat in Imphal East district on Saturday.

Highlighting the urgency of intervention in hill regions, Sinha underscored the importance of springshed management, noting that several natural springs are gradually drying up due to deforestation and unscientific land-use practices.

He stressed that the depletion of spring water sources poses a serious threat to water security in hill areas, where communities largely depend on springs for daily needs.

Wetland mapping and rejuvenation efforts

As the state’s nodal agency, the DoECC has also delineated and mapped 71 wetlands across Manipur. Of these, three wetlands have already been officially notified, while four others are currently undergoing rejuvenation work, Sinha informed.

Emphasising environmental stewardship, he stated that safeguarding natural resources requires collective responsibility to ensure sustainability for future generations.

The principal secretary further revealed that the Central government has allocated Rs 2,700 crore for springshed management across the country. Several projects under this initiative are already being implemented in different regions, including Manipur.

Environment calendar 2026: Raising awareness

Sinha said the Environment Calendar 2026 forms an integral part of the directorate’s environment information and dissemination programme, aimed at spreading awareness about key environmental events and observances at global, national, and state levels.

The calendar marks major observances beginning with World Wetlands Day (February 2), followed by World Water Day (March), World Earth Day (April), International Day for Biological Diversity (May), World Environment Day (June), World Nature Conservation Day (July), International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (August), World Ozone Day (September), and International Mountain Day (December).

The initiative reflects Manipur’s growing emphasis on sustainable environmental governance amid increasing ecological challenges.
