Gugra Khurd village, having been profoundly affected by the tragedy, mourns the loss of five residents who died after consuming the toxic liquor. Among the deceased are three men from a single family, comprising two brothers and a cousin. Community members have reported that about thirty others from the village continue to receive medical care in local hospitals.

A villager, Jasrath Lodhi, shared that Ujiyar Singh and Bhagwan Singh Lodhi had recently returned home from Indore, where they worked in a factory. The two had come home to celebrate Raksha Bandhan and attended a gathering with friends, where they reportedly overindulged in alcoholic beverages.

Bhagwan Singh Lodhi’s wife, Suman Singh Lodhi, expressed her grief, stating that her aspirations have been shattered by this incident. She urged the government to intervene, advocating for a ban on the sale of alcohol to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

Calls For Accountability and Further Action

In light of the incident, Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar has submitted a letter to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, demanding a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the matter. He has called for stringent action against those accountable and a review of the potential involvement of senior police and excise officials.

Singhar has also urged for a targeted campaign against illicit liquor in the affected areas and throughout the state, noting the severity of the situation with the confirmed deaths and many individuals still hospitalised. Officials have indicated that three excise officers and two policemen have been suspended in connection with the incident as part of the investigation.
