Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has reached out to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta regarding the tragic death of 54-year-old musician Chongtham Vikram Singh. The musician reportedly succumbed to injuries sustained during a violent incident in Delhi. In his letter, Singh expressed profound concern and called for immediate action from the Delhi government to ensure a thorough investigation into the matter.

Singh’s correspondence highlighted the urgent need for accountability and safety measures for the North Eastern community in Delhi. He petitioned for a fair and timely investigation, urging that any investigative processes be conducted under the supervision of senior police officials. Additionally, he called for stringent legal action against those involved in the assault.

Demand for Stringent Legal Action

In his letter, the Manipur Chief Minister specifically outlined his demands for the investigation. He requested an expedited and high-level inquiry to be performed transparently, emphasising the necessity of bringing all perpetrators—both those who physically assaulted Singh and any conspirators—swiftly to justice. He further noted that the case should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law to deter similar incidents in the future.

Moreover, Singh suggested that, depending on the circumstances, the case could be transferred to an independent agency like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to enhance public trust in the inquiry. This recommendation illustrates his desire for comprehensive oversight and impartiality in processing the case.

Singh also stressed that the safety and security of the North Eastern community in Delhi must be prioritised. He urged the implementation of visible safety measures to ensure that those from Manipur and other North Eastern states can live and work without fear of violence or harassment.

Details of the Incident

The unfortunate passing of Chongtham Vikram Singh came after he reportedly raised objections to noise and disruption caused by nearby delivery boys and dhaba workers in Kilokari Village, Ashram, Delhi. Allegedly, following a dispute regarding the excessive noise, he confronted a group of individuals outside his residence. Witnesses reported that he was assaulted with physical blows, leading to severe injuries.

Following the altercation, Singh was taken to Holy Family Hospital by his son, where he eventually died from his injuries. According to South East Deputy Commissioner of Police Vineet Kumar, the confrontation arose over complaints regarding noise, resulting in a physical exchange between Singh and the group of men.

As the investigation unfolds, the Delhi Police have arrested seven individuals and a juvenile in connection with Singh’s death. Law enforcement officials indicate that the arrests were made in the wake of this violent encounter, as they continue to gather evidence and statements from witnesses to better understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.
