Jason Gillespie, former head coach of the Pakistan cricket team, has strongly condemned the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), alleging that he was undermined during his brief tenure. In an interview with The Telegraph, Gillespie expressed his disappointment with the current state of Pakistan cricket and indicated that he would continue to voice concerns regarding the management, despite the PCB reportedly owing him thousands of dollars in unpaid remuneration.

Gillespie was dismissed from his position as Test head coach in December 2024, merely months after being appointed, and he stated that he continues to await payment. The Australian cricketer asserted, “The PCB still owes me thousands of dollars, but I was never going to be a yes man.”

He emphasised his commitment to his principles throughout his career. Gillespie revealed that he was removed from his role because he was candid about his views, which he maintained throughout his professional journey. Though he could have remained silent to receive his salary, he felt that would have compromised his integrity.

Challenges Facing Pakistan Cricket

Gillespie’s remarks come as Pakistan cricket navigates a challenging period marked by recent poor performances. Following consecutive defeats in a three-match Test series against England, the PCB has initiated an internal investigation into the team’s management. As a result of the performance issues, the board has implemented significant changes to both the squad and management personnel.

According to Gillespie, the setbacks are indicative of broader systemic problems within the PCB, stemming not just from on-field activities but from the structure and management of the organisation. He mentioned feeling disrespected during his tenure, specifically pointing to Aaqib Javed, who he alleged played a key role in undermining his authority. “The whole experience just deflated me and put me off coaching,” Gillespie remarked, reflecting on the toll his experience took on him mentally.

Discontent with Aaqib Javed’s Role

Initially, Gillespie accepted the coaching position believing he could help revitalise Pakistan’s fast-bowling culture. He noted, “When I came on board, they wanted to bring back fast bowling,” and he was optimistic about collaborating on developing pitches conducive to faster bowling. However, he believes Aaqib Javed’s appointment as a selector dramatically shifted the dynamics within the team, which ultimately altered his role and responsibilities.

Gillespie explained that his initial remit included overseeing the Test side and playing a part in selection discussions. However, as time progressed, he found himself removed from key decisions. “I went from looking after the Test side, managing that and looking after the players and the staff to absolutely no role in anything,” he stated, underscoring his decreasing influence within the organisation.

Despite leaving his coaching position, Gillespie’s dissatisfaction with Javed’s ongoing involvement in the PCB remains pronounced. He has publicly questioned why Javed retains his position as chairman of selectors amid the team’s declining performance. Gillespie mentioned, “Aaqib is still chairman of selectors… Well, no, Aaqib, I’m sorry they haven’t [improved]. You’ve actually gone down in the rankings in all three formats since you took over,” indicating that he believes accountability is necessary in the current leadership.
