In a recent enforcement action, Kolkata authorities issued temporary closure notices to 919 hotels and guest houses due to non-compliance with fire safety regulations. This decision, confirmed by officials on Tuesday, comes in the wake of increased inspections by the state fire services department, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, and Kolkata Police. The inspection process revealed that only 41 out of the 960 establishments reviewed so far adhered to the necessary fire safety requirements.

The intensified inspection campaign was initiated following a tragic incident at Shikha Inn, a guest house located on Mirza Ghalib Street. On August 19, a fire broke out during the early hours, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals, including seven Bangladeshi nationals. This disaster has prompted local authorities to ensure stricter compliance with fire safety norms across the city.

Hotels and guest houses that received closure notices must enhance their fire safety measures according to stipulated standards. Additionally, they are required to secure a Renewal of Fire Safety Certificate (RFSC) prior to reapplying for operational licenses. This proactive approach aims to mitigate the risks associated with potential fires in the future.

Extent of Ongoing Inspections and Future Actions

As part of the ongoing inspection efforts, approximately 960 establishments have been evaluated, which represents around one-fourth of the estimated 3,700 hotels and guest houses functioning in Kolkata. Officials indicated that inspections will persist until all remaining facilities are thoroughly assessed to ensure compliance with fire safety protocols.

Last week, the state fire and emergency services department took further action by mandating the immediate evacuation of specific areas within a commercial building on Camac Street. This building houses the office of TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. The evacuation order was issued due to the building’s alleged failure to comply with established fire safety measures, with inspections conducted on August 31 revealing that the sixth and seventh floors were deemed “unsafe from a fire and life-safety point of view.”

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has responded by challenging this order in the Calcutta High Court. The court has granted the party permission to file an urgent writ petition regarding the evacuation requirement. A hearing on the matter is anticipated later this week, as TMC seeks to address the concerns raised by the fire safety department.
