Israel has announced the closure of the British consulate located in East Jerusalem in reaction to trade restrictions imposed by the UK, France, and Canada. These countries recently unveiled measures targeting imports from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, marking a significant development in diplomatic relations between Israel and the United Kingdom.

The action was confirmed by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar on Tuesday, who stated that the closure is part of a broader range of countermeasures taken in response to these trade limitations. The British consulate serves as a diplomatic mission accredited to the Palestinian Authority situated in the West Bank.

Countermeasures Against UK Officials

In addition to closing the consulate, Israel plans to restrict entry for 12 elected British officials and other citizens of the UK, citing accusations of their involvement in “antisemitic and anti-Israel activities.” This measure further illustrates the deteriorating relations between Israel and the UK amid the ongoing conflict.

Sa’ar’s statements reflected Israel’s assertion that British officials are meddling in its domestic matters. He specifically condemned British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband’s characterisation of the treatment of Palestinians as “ethnic cleansing,” labelling such statements as “outrageous lies.”

The Israeli government maintains that its actions are a necessary response to what it perceives as unwarranted interference in its internal affairs. Sa’ar mentioned that this strategy has been discussed and coordinated in conjunction with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog has added to the criticisms by claiming that the UK is intruding on Israel’s electoral processes, as the country prepares for elections scheduled for late October. Herzog’s remarks suggest that the Israeli leadership believes that international pressure could influence domestic political dynamics.
