Huawei has introduced its latest tri-fold smartphone, the Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design, just two days prior to Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event set for September 9. This forthcoming Apple event aims to showcase its inaugural foldable iPhone. The Mate XT 2 will be available for purchase starting September 10 in China.

This launch comes as both Huawei and Xiaomi present their newest foldable devices ahead of Apple’s entry into this competitive market. These prior unveilings have enabled the Chinese brands to establish benchmarks in foldable technology, setting a challenging landscape for Apple.

Specifications and Features of the Huawei Mate XT 2

The Huawei Mate XT 2 boasts a 6.5-inch OLED LTPO cover display, featuring a Full-HD+ resolution, a refresh rate of 120Hz, and a peak brightness of up to 6,500 nits. When fully unfolded, it transforms into a 10.2-inch OLED display with a 3K resolution, offering a refresh rate of 90Hz and a 12.8:9 aspect ratio. Additionally, the device incorporates a hardware-based privacy display that restricts side viewing angles, thus safeguarding visual content from prying eyes.

This model also showcases a revamped folding mechanism, adopting an inward-folding design complemented by a new G-shaped hinge. This approach differs from the outward-folding design of its predecessor, with Huawei asserting that the updated design enhances display protection when folded.

The smartphone is powered by the newly developed Kirin 9050 Pro chipset, engineered with Huawei’s LogicFolding architecture. Huawei claims this chipset achieves over 42 per cent higher performance than its predecessor, along with enhancements to the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) and Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). The device features 16GB of RAM, with storage options reaching 2TB.

Camera and Battery Capabilities

The Mate XT 2 is equipped with a quad-camera system located on the central panel. This includes a 50-megapixel RYYB primary camera accompanied by an 11.28-inch sensor, featuring a variable aperture and optical image stabilisation (OIS). Furthermore, it houses a 50-megapixel RYYB periscope telephoto camera providing 3.5x optical zoom, a 40-megapixel RYYB ultra-wide camera, and a third-generation Red Maple multi-spectral colour sensor that enhances colour accuracy. For selfies, there are two 8-megapixel cameras, one for the cover and another for the inner display.

This smartphone features a 5,600mAh battery, supporting 66W wired SuperCharge and 50W wireless charging. With its advanced folding mechanism, the Mate XT 2 maintains a slim profile, measuring just 3.5mm thick when unfolded and weighing 299 grams, expanding to 12.3mm when folded.

The device also holds IP58 and IP59 ratings for dust and water resistance, which adds to its durability. Additional features include a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, touch-sensitive buttons capable of recording ECG readings, and compatibility with the M-Pen 3 stylus. It supports 5G connectivity, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0 LE, satellite communication, NFC, and a USB Type-C 3.1 port. The smartphone operates on HarmonyOS 7.

Pricing and Availability

The pricing for the Huawei Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design commences at CNY 19,999 (approximately Rs 2.81 lakh) for the 16GB RAM and 256GB storage variant. The model with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage is priced at CNY 21,999 (around Rs 3.09 lakh), while the 1TB version retails for CNY 23,999 (roughly Rs 3.38 lakh). A variant featuring a privacy display and 1TB storage is available for CNY 24,999 (approximately Rs 3.52 lakh). The most premium offering, the Collector Edition with 16GB RAM and 2TB storage, is priced at CNY 29,999 (about Rs 4.22 lakh), which includes the M-Pen 3 stylus.

The Mate XT 2 will be available in Black, Purple, and White colour options when it launches on September 10 in China. As of now, there are no announcements regarding international availability or pricing for markets outside China.
