Sports Ministry and Craig Fulton Disagree on Hockey Teams for Asiad and World Cup

The CSR Journal Magazine

The ongoing discussions regarding India’s hockey teams for the Asian Games and the World Cup highlight a divergence between the Sports Ministry and the national coaching staff. The Ministry has emphasised the need for Hockey India to select its top teams for both events. This comes amid concerns over player burnout, given the proximity of the two prestigious tournaments in the sporting calendar.

The World Cup is scheduled to take place from August 15 to 30, 2026, across Belgium and the Netherlands, while the Asian Games are set for September 19 to October 4, 2026, in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Despite the events not overlapping directly, the limited recovery time for athletes has raised alarms, particularly for both men’s and women’s teams.

Coaching Perspectives on Team Selection

Craig Fulton, head coach for the men’s team, along with Sjoerd Marijne, the women’s team coach, have expressed their preference for sending a single squad to both competitions. They argue that competing with the same players in both events will help maintain performance levels and continuity, especially after a challenging year for the teams.

<h4″A ministry source claimed it would be ideal to have two distinct teams, particularly for the Asian Games, which serves as an Olympic qualifier. This viewpoint underlines the belief that strong teams need to be fielded for competitive success,” the source indicated. The Sports Ministry has suggested that Hockey India must maintain a robust B team ready to step in for various competitions, asserting that the pool of available talent is ample enough to support this structure.

The gold medal-winning teams in both men’s and women’s categories at the Asian Games will secure qualification for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. This adds another layer of importance to the selection process, as both tournaments will serve as key indicators for future success.

Comments from Hockey India

Bholanath Singh, the Secretary General of Hockey India, acknowledged the Ministry’s stance but clarified that decisions regarding the final team selections are still pending. “We will send the best teams for both the Asian Games and the World Cup,” he stated to PTI, reiterating that the squads are yet to be fully determined. He affirmed that all aspects are being considered to ensure optimal outcomes for both events.

This ongoing debate over team selection is not unprecedented, as concerns regarding athlete fatigue have frequently emerged in years where major tournaments, such as the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games, coincide. Historically, the scheduling has raised issues about athlete performance and well-being, a matter that requires careful management.

Interestingly, the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will feature a reduced programme that excludes hockey, among other significant sports like shooting, badminton, wrestling, and table tennis. This alteration may alleviate some scheduling pressures but underscores the need for strategic planning as India’s teams gear up for the challenges ahead.
