Cricket teams participating in the upcoming Asian Games can choose to stay in accommodations arranged by the organisers or arrange their own hotels, according to Naoki Alex Miyaji, CEO of the Japan Cricket Association. This statement was made during a discussion regarding the logistics for the tournament, as some of Asia’s top cricketing nations expressed concerns about the current accommodation arrangements.

Miyaji stated that the Asian Games are being organised by the Aichi-Nagoya Games Organising Committee (AINAGOC) in collaboration with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and under the auspices of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). He confirmed the JCA is providing support but is not directly managing all logistical aspects.

During his interview, he reassured that discussions regarding accommodation have been ongoing between the ACC and AINAGOC. The intended accommodations will be available to all participating cricket teams, which include some of the largest cricketing nations.

Concerns Raised by Major Cricket Boards

Reportedly, at a recent ACC meeting, officials from full-member cricket boards, including India and Pakistan, voiced concerns regarding the living conditions and travel logistics provided to players during the Games. They have expressed a desire for representatives to evaluate the arrangements personally before the tournament begins.

Among the primary concerns is the spaciousness of the assigned rooms, which may not adequately accommodate two players alongside their cricket gear and personal belongings, causing unease amongst the teams. The designated accommodation is located approximately 20 kilometres from the Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin City, Aichi Prefecture, where cricket matches will be held.

Given that the Asian Games commence on September 17, Miyaji aimed to alleviate worries regarding these arrangements and addressed the reports that claimed team bathroom facilities may be situated as far as 500 metres from the cricket venue.

Efforts to Ensure Comfortable Facilities for Players

Miyaji noted that many sports at the Asian Games are being provided with more restrictive accommodations, such as cruise ships or container hotels. He also clarified that teams have the option to arrange their own accommodation if they prefer. Restrooms will be available within the player area, including both temporary and permanent facilities at the venue.

While acknowledging that the facilities are temporary, he emphasised that AINAGOC has collaborated closely with the ACC over the past year to ensure the best possible conditions within the provided time constraints. Miyaji assured that players and officials would have access to comfortable spaces during the competition.

He expressed optimism regarding the tournament and affirmed that cricket would feature prominently at the Asian Games. Notably, this event marks the first appearance of Asia’s top cricket teams on Japanese soil.

Upcoming Matches for Indian Teams

India’s men’s cricket team will enter the Asian Games at the quarter-final stage, with their first match scheduled for September 28. Conversely, the women’s team will commence their campaign earlier, facing hosts Japan on September 18 under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur.

The successful execution of the tournament remains a priority for organisers, as they work to provide optimal conditions for all participating nations while addressing the concerns raised by team officials. All eyes are now on the Asian Games, as cricket’s inclusion is expected to draw significant attention from fans across the continent.
