French President Emmanuel Macron, King Charles III, and UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham attended a private viewing of the Bayeux Tapestry at the British Museum. This event marks the first time the tapestry has been in Britain for nearly 1,000 years. The tapestry, renowned for its historical significance, is set to be publicly exhibited from September 10 as part of a ten-month exhibition.

The private viewing precedes formal discussions between Macron and Burnham scheduled to take place at 10 Downing Street on Thursday. The agenda for these talks is expected to focus on addressing the issue of migrant crossings in small boats. Other critical topics likely to be discussed include the ongoing conflicts in Iran and Ukraine, as well as Burnham’s aspirations for strengthening ties with the European Union.

Prior to the museum visit, Macron and his wife, Brigitte, shared tea with King Charles and Queen Camilla at Clarence House. The group then travelled to the British Museum by royal Bentley. Upon their arrival, they were joined by Burnham, his wife Marie-France van Heel, and members of the team responsible for transferring the tapestry from France to the UK.

Significance of the Tapestry

The Bayeux Tapestry, measuring 230 feet (70 metres), illustrates the Norman conquest of England in 1066. France has loaned the tapestry, which has been insured for 960 million euros (approximately $1.1 billion), following extensive diplomatic negotiations. Its journey from France to the UK involved a highly secure operation via road and rail in July, marking the first occasion it has been in British territory since the 11th century.

Burnham described the tapestry’s arrival as a significant milestone in the history of both nations. In exchange for the loan, the British Museum will send artefacts, including Viking and Anglo-Saxon treasures, to museums in Normandy. The tapestry is being displayed in high-tech cases, allowing visitors to view its intricate details.

The artwork portrays 58 distinct scenes that feature combat, coronation, and the plight of ordinary individuals affected by the last successful invasion of England. Stitched from wool thread onto linen, the tapestry chronicles events leading up to the Battle of Hastings in October 1066, where William, Duke of Normandy, triumphed over King Harold’s Anglo-Saxon forces. This invasion ended Saxon rule and initiated a complex relationship between Britain and France.

Digital and Educational Initiatives

The tapestry is believed to have been commissioned by Bishop Odo of Bayeux, who was William’s half-brother, and possibly created by women, potentially nuns, in England. Most of its existence over the past millennia has been spent in Bayeux, France, with only brief exhibitions at the Louvre Museum in Paris. The decision to loan the tapestry was announced during Macron’s state visit to the UK in July 2025, despite concerns from various French cultural figures regarding the risks associated with transporting the delicate fabric.

The UK government regards this display as a once-in-a-lifetime cultural event. Additionally, Burnham’s administration will facilitate a digital exhibition to share the tapestry’s narrative across the UK, while students will participate in a “live national history lesson” scheduled for October 14. This initiative aims to broaden public engagement with the artwork and its historical context.

Burnham, who assumed office six weeks ago, is set to host Macron for discussions on various pressing matters. His office reported that enhanced law enforcement cooperation with France has successfully decreased the number of crossings of the English Channel this year by more than 40 per cent compared to the previous year. The dialogue is also anticipated to encompass discussions about Ukraine, Iran, and strategies for rebuilding relations with the European Union following recent changes brought on by Brexit.
