Severe storms, relentless rain, and strong winds have affected various regions of Uttar Pradesh, resulting in 16 fatalities over a two-day period. The extreme weather occurred during the Nautapa phase, known for being one of the hottest periods in the year, impacting public life significantly in districts such as Lucknow and across the western, eastern, and Terai regions.

The inclement weather caused extensive damage, including uprooted trees, destroyed tin roofs, and downed electricity poles. Lightning strikes and sudden flooding were reported, further complicating the situation. Transport services were severely disrupted, with rail services particularly affected in the Kanpur-Orai section, as fallen trees obstructed tracks and damaged overhead electrical lines.

Among the areas hardest hit, Bundelkhand reported the highest number of casualties, with ten deaths recorded. Specifically, the localities of Banda and Hakimpur each experienced three fatalities, prompting local authorities to take action. The administration is in the process of investigating additional reports of fatalities across various districts including Raebareli, Ambedkarnagar, Kaushambi, Pratapgarh, Azamgarh, Ballia, Bhadohi, Deoria, Agra, Mathura, Unnao, and Fatehpur.

Government Response and Relief Operations

In response to the crisis, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed District Magistrates to expedite relief and rescue efforts. The Chief Minister has mandated a detailed assessment of the damage caused and has urged officials to ensure timely financial support is distributed to affected families. This proactive approach aims to address the immediate needs of those impacted by the calamity.

The Meteorological Department has also responded to the ongoing situation by issuing a fresh weather alert for Saturday. The warning includes expectations of persistent storms and strong winds in 46 districts, along with forecasts of heavy rainfall in 14 districts of the state. The preparedness of local authorities is being tested as they brace for continued adverse weather conditions.

To date, significant rainfall figures have been recorded across the state, with Mirzapur receiving 100 mm, Ayodhya 90 mm, Prayagraj 61 mm, and Unnao 59 mm. The heavy precipitation, along with hailstorms, has resulted in widespread damage to crops and properties in areas like Sitapur, Badaun, and Jhansi. This weather phenomenon is providing a welcome relief in some respects, as temperatures in various districts have fallen by as much as eight degrees Celsius below normal, alleviating the severe summer heat.
