The City of Seattle recently became the first local government in the United States to unveil a life-size statue of Swami Vivekananda at Westlake Square Park, a central location in downtown Seattle. This milestone was marked on April 12, with the statue being jointly unveiled by Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson and the Consul General of India in Seattle, according to an official statement from the Consulate.

This bronze statue, representing a significant cultural exchange, is the first of its kind to be installed by a city government anywhere in the United States. Situated in Westlake Square, the location is noted for its high foot traffic, receiving over 400,000 visitors daily and millions each month. It is conveniently located near various landmarks, including the Amazon headquarters, the Seattle Convention Center, and the Seattle Center Monorail.

The ceremony attracted a number of dignitaries, among them the Mayor of Kent, Dana Ralph; the Mayor of Auburn, Nancy Backus; the Mayor of Tukwila, Tom McLeod; the Mayor of Normandy Park, Eric Zimmerman; and the Mayor of Kirkland, Kelly Curtis. Numerous community leaders from the Indian American diaspora also participated, highlighting the statue’s significance to the local community.

Cultural Significance of the Monument

The Swami Vivekananda Monument is a gift from the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) to the City of Seattle. This initiative aligns with the city’s recognition of its diverse multicultural landscape and was timed to coincide with the celebration of ICCR Day, marking the significance of cultural diplomacy. The installation is part of a broader strategy to enhance people-to-people connections between India and American communities, particularly in the Pacific Northwest.
