Satellite Reveals Clear Skies Over Europe As Heatwave Approaches

The CSR Journal Magazine

A recent satellite image depicts large areas of western and southern Europe nearly devoid of clouds, signalling an impending heatwave. Captured by the Meteosat Third Generation satellite on July 8, this image reveals extensive clear skies across major regions, including France and Spain, which are anticipated to experience severe heat conditions in the coming days.

The view from approximately 36,000 kilometres above Earth shows sunny and elevated temperatures across not only France and Spain but also southern England and the western Mediterranean. Aside from some patches of morning fog on the Atlantic coastline, the absence of cloud cover serves as an ominous forecast for soaring temperatures.

Given the preceding record-high temperatures experienced in June, European residents may find themselves unprepared for a new wave of intense heat. Reports indicate that the previous heatwaves left little time for recovery amid the escalating temperatures.

June’s Record Temperatures in Europe

This heatwave follows one of the most extreme starts to summer recorded in European history. June 2026 marked the hottest June for western Europe, with averages exceeding normal temperatures by over 3°C. Several nations witnessed their temperature records breaking by a substantial margin of 2°C to 3°C.

Germany reported highs of 41.7°C, while the Czech Republic experienced around 41.9°C. Poland’s temperatures reached 40.5°C, and some areas in France even approached 44°C. In Spain, temperatures soared above 45°C in certain regions, prompting widespread concern.

The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) characterised this event as “extraordinary.” By early July, this heatwave was associated with over 5,600 excess deaths throughout Europe, with France alone contributing to a significant portion of this number. Studies by scientists at World Weather Attribution suggested that climate change was a key factor in intensifying this unprecedented heat situation.

Upcoming Heatwave Expected to Escalate Conditions

Prolonged cloudless conditions over western and southern Europe are set to lead to uninterrupted sunlight, resulting in further temperature increases in the immediate future. Meteorological forecasts indicate that parts of Spain may reach temperatures of 43°C to 44°C again, while some regions in France might experience temperatures in the low to mid-40s.

Meteorologists have identified a heat dome as the driving force behind this extreme weather pattern. This high-pressure system retains hot air close to the surface, akin to the conditions observed during last month’s record-breaking heatwave. The persistent pattern raises serious concerns about the frequency of such severe weather phenomena in Europe.

As residents of France and Spain brace themselves for another oppressive week, authorities are issuing warnings about increased electricity consumption for cooling systems, as well as a heightened risk of wildfires in already drought-stricken areas. The potential for severe impacts makes this heatwave a critical situation for the affected regions.
