Sanjay Raut, MP from Shiv Sena (UBT), has publicly expressed his concerns regarding the conclusion of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s 26-day hunger strike. Raut stated that the fast should have ended at Jantar Mantar amidst supporters, highlighting the significance of such a public closure. His comments followed Wangchuk’s decision to call off his protest, which Raut welcomed but was quick to scrutinise.

Raut expressed suspicion about the involvement of Union Ministers during the end of the hunger strike, suggesting that this raised questions about the government’s role in the process. He indicated that the presence of ministers from the same government being protested against was noteworthy and needed further clarification.

Concerns Over Government Assurances

The Shiv Sena MP queried the nature of the assurances reportedly provided by the government to Sonam Wangchuk. He demanded transparency regarding the discussions that led to the ending of the hunger strike, which many view as a pivotal moment for youth activism in India. Raut underscored that one of the primary demands of the protest was the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Raut continued his critique by questioning the rationale behind Wangchuk’s decision to halt his hunger strike if this key demand remained unmet. He alleged that the government appeared to be shielding Pradhan from accountability, raising further concerns about the circumstances that culminated in the hunger strike’s termination.

In addition, Raut highlighted the unfortunate incidents of violence, including the death of a student and injuries sustained by others, which were allegedly caused by police action during the demonstrations. These events, he argued, intensified the seriousness of the situation surrounding the protest.

Future Protests Planned in Mumbai

Raut criticised the Chief Minister for only now advocating for dialogue, pointing out that the government had ignored prior calls for discussions from the Opposition. He asserted that the supposed desire for dialogue seemed insincere in the context of earlier inaction concerning pressing demands from protestors.

Moreover, Raut accused the government of attempting to undermine the protest at Jantar Mantar, labelling Wangchuk’s treatment as “inhumane.” He reiterated that this movement extends beyond individual activists and is fundamentally a challenge to the political system in place.

Reflection on Democratic Principles

Sanjay Raut acknowledged the significance of Wangchuk’s fasting effort for the nation’s youth and educational framework, asserting that he deserves respect for his dedication. He expressed hope that Wangchuk would remain engaged in advocating for the cause, underscoring the broader importance of continued activism.

Lastly, Raut addressed the issue of the anti-defection law, accusing the BJP government of undermining its principles by facilitating defections. He claimed that legislators were being influenced financially, which in turn called into question the reliability of new legislative measures introduced by the government.

Raut concluded by stressing that a government that disregards existing laws should not anticipate public trust in newly proposed legislation.
