Rs 38 Crore Gold Seized, 24 Women Arrested in Mumbai Airport Smuggling Operation

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a significant operation against organised gold smuggling, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has successfully dismantled a syndicate in Mumbai. The operation involved the confiscation of 29.37 kg of gold, valued at approximately Rs 37.74 crore, alongside the arrest of 24 individuals allegedly involved in the smuggling activities.

Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officials identified a group of female suspects arriving from Nairobi. They were reportedly trying to transport substantial amounts of gold through Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. This operation underscores the ongoing efforts by customs officials to combat illicit gold smuggling in the region.

Under the codename “Operation Dhahabu Blitz,” which translates to ‘gold’ in Swahili, enforcement teams promptly intercepted the women as they attempted to pass through the airport. The operation was characterised by its swift and coordinated approach, resulting in the recovery of 25.10 kg of gold bars and 4.27 kg of gold jewellery concealed within their luggage and clothing.

Details of the Operation and Arrests

Officials detailed that the recent bust is likely to be one of the most substantial operations carried out at Mumbai airport this year. The DRI’s Mumbai Zonal Unit executed the operation following an alert regarding the women arriving from Kenya, suggesting that they were involved in gold smuggling activities.

The arrested women are foreign nationals, specifically trained to conceal gold and evade airport security checks. This indicates a well-organised smuggling network employing sophisticated methods to facilitate these illegal operations. Their training and coordination suggest a complex infrastructure designed to circumvent detection by authorities.

In addition to the swift action taken during the operation, officials are conducting further inquiries to uncover the overarching structure of the smuggling ring. They are focused on identifying the key figures orchestrating these illicit activities, indicating that more developments may follow as investigations continue.

Legal Proceedings and Future Investigations

The 24 women apprehended in this operation are expected to be presented in court as part of the legal proceedings against them. Authorities have stated that the case will serve as a focal point for ongoing investigations, with an emphasis on dismantling the larger networks involved in gold smuggling.

While the immediate operation has been concluded, the DRI has emphasised its commitment to continuing investigations aimed at tracking and apprehending those who manage and finance these smuggling activities. The recovery of such a large quantity of gold is anticipated to have serious repercussions for the entire syndicate.

The operation not only highlights the ongoing issue of gold smuggling in India but also showcases the diligence of the DRI in dealing with complex criminal operations. The agency continues to encourage public vigilance and cooperation in reporting suspicious activities that could assist in future crackdowns on smuggling operations.
