The flooding has persisted for over a week, primarily attributed to rising water levels in the Ganga River, which have inundated numerous houses, rendering them uninhabitable. Local residents report locking up their homes as they relocate to safer areas amidst growing concerns for their safety and property.

One resident shared their plight, stating, “We are unable to go out because of the water, so we have locked up our house. Now we are living on rent. There has been waterlogging here for the past eight days, and about 25 to 30 houses have been secured with locks.” Another affected individual echoed similar sentiments, indicating that they have also had to close their home and endure prolonged rental conditions due to the inundation.

Impact on Agricultural Land and Crops

The flooding has not only affected residential properties but has also created significant challenges for agricultural activities in the district. Many local farmers find their fields inundated, making it difficult to access their homes and safeguard their belongings. Concern is mounting among villagers as floodwaters encroach upon farmland and orchards, leading to fears of extensive damage to crops.

In one troubling account, a local villager described the detrimental impact on a nearby mango orchard, highlighting that the floodwaters have caused considerable tree loss. “This is a mango orchard. We tied trees together to prevent them from being uprooted, but many trees were already lost,” the resident explained, noting the ongoing threat to remaining crops. The proactive measures taken to tie down trees have somewhat mitigated the erosion, a previous concern for the community.

The villager elaborated on the economic repercussions of the flooding, stating that losses reach approximately Rs 20 to 25 lakh, particularly referencing the destruction of 14 to 15 bighas of agricultural land. “The village is suffering massive damage. The crops are completely ruined; we are left with nothing,” they stated, illustrating the severe agricultural disruption faced by the community.

Requests for Assistance and Monitoring Efforts

Despite the extent of the calamity, local officials have not yet released a formal statement regarding relief or rehabilitation measures for those affected by the flooding. Authorities are currently engaged in monitoring the water levels of the Ganga and Ramganga rivers, remaining vigilant to the possibility that continued rainfall may exacerbate existing conditions in the region.

Residents have urgently appealed to the district administration for assistance that includes compensation for their crop losses and damages to their land as they confront the looming threat of further erosion and flooding.
