The Aam Aadmi Party and the Goa Forward Party have joined forces to create a new alliance called ‘Goa First’, aimed at the upcoming Goa Assembly elections in 2027. AAP’s national convenor, Arvind Kejriwal, made this announcement, positioning the alliance as an alternative to the current political landscape dominated by the BJP and Congress. Kejriwal asserted that voters deserve an option beyond these two major parties, arguing that they merely pretend to oppose each other during elections while collaborating behind the scenes.

Kejriwal stated, “The people of Goa have been cheated twice. They won’t be cheated a third time.” He emphasised that the alliance seeks to offer a genuine alternative that prioritises the interests of Goans. According to him, the existing Bipartisan structure has failed the public, and this alliance intends to challenge that narrative.

As the elections for the 40-member Goa Legislative Assembly approach, scheduled before March 2027, the newly formed alliance aims to galvanise support among disillusioned voters in the state.

Criticism of Current Government

Further, Kejriwal raised concerns over the BJP’s claims regarding government formation, suggesting that the party’s assertion of being able to govern with just a minimal number of seats indicated reliance on Congress support. He questioned the feasibility of such claims and called for a more accountable political approach that genuinely caters to the needs of Goa.

He highlighted that Goans desire genuine change and an authentic political alternative that prioritises their needs over political expediency.

Details of the ‘Goa First’ Coalition

The Goa Forward Party, led by former Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai, is a regional political outfit. Currently, it holds one seat in the 40-member state Assembly. The Aam Aadmi Party, on the other hand, has two MLAs representing Benaulim and Velim in South Goa. Together, they aim to establish a cohesive front under the ‘Goa First’ banner, targeting the upcoming elections.

In a related development, Kejriwal announced that the AAP plans to be more discerning when selecting its nominees for the Rajya Sabha in the future. This comes in light of instances where some of the party’s MPs have left the organisation, raising questions regarding their nominee selection process.

Simultaneously, the AAP has asserted a strong position in Punjab, as highlighted by Aman Arora, the state party president and a cabinet minister. During a press conference, he expressed confidence in the party’s ability to retain power, attributing this to an alleged positive response from the public toward the governance model in Punjab. This shows the juxtaposed electoral strategies in both states as AAP prepares for its future political endeavours amidst the challenges in differing regional contexts.
