The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has recently categorised a mosque located near Terminal 2 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport as illegal. The MMRDA’s letter also highlighted that under the Operation, Management and Development Agreement (OMDA), MIAL bears responsibility for the planning, development, construction, and upkeep of infrastructure within the airport’s jurisdiction. The authority’s directive underscores its expectation that MIAL carries out the removal in adherence to all relevant legal processes.

Political Involvement and Public Reaction

The situation has garnered attention from political figures, notably BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, who raised concerns regarding the mosque’s construction. On September 3, Somaiya visited the airport along with other officials to assess the site. He claimed that the mosque was built without the necessary permissions and that it occupied the taxi parking area near Terminal 2.

After the issuance of the MMRDA’s letter, Somaiya publicly disseminated the contents via social media. He asserted that the MMRDA had confirmed the illegal status of the mosque and ordered MIAL to demolish it. Using the platform X, he wrote about the MMRDA’s stance, elucidating that the state authority had taken a firm position against the unauthorised structure. He called for legal action against individuals associated with the mosque, referring to them as being involved in “Land Jihad.”

Somaiya also mentioned that the MMRDA had issued a show-cause notice regarding the mosque, indicating that further measures are anticipated within the next fortnight. The political discourse surrounding the construction suggests that it may remain a contentious topic in the coming weeks as various stakeholders respond to these developments.
