Rathindra Bose of the BJP Elected Speaker of West Bengal Legislative Assembly

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rathindra Bose, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) representing the Coochbehar Dakshin constituency, has been elected as the new Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. The election took place on May 15, where Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari accompanied Bose to the Speaker’s chair, adhering to the traditions of the Assembly.

Support from the Chief Minister

On the preceding day, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced Bose’s nomination for the position. He expressed hope that Bose’s candidacy would receive unanimous backing from all members of the Assembly. Adhikari emphasised Bose’s dedication to the party and his professional background as a Chartered Accountant, indicating that these qualities equip him well for the responsibilities of the role.

Furthermore, Adhikari stated that Bose had never sought positions like MLA, Minister, or Speaker, showcasing the party’s recognition of his commitment. The Chief Minister noted that Bose possesses the administrative expertise and organisational experience essential for leadership in this role.

Adhikari also encouraged the Opposition to honour parliamentary traditions by supporting a consensual election for the Speaker, adding that this practice has historically been the norm in West Bengal.

Rathindra Bose’s Election Victory

Prior to his election as Speaker, Rathindra Bose secured victory in the recent Assembly elections held in 2026. He triumphed over Avijit De Bhowmik of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) with a margin of 23,284 votes, representing an 11.4 per cent difference in voter support. This decisive win solidified his position within the Assembly.

The recent elections resulted in a considerable shift in the political landscape of West Bengal, with the BJP emerging as a dominant force. The party won 207 out of the total 294 seats, a substantial increase from the previous election when it won only 77 seats. In contrast, the TMC, which secured 212 seats in the last Assembly polls, ended up with only 80 seats in this election, marking a significant decline and the end of their 15-year governance in the state.

The diminished performance of the TMC has led to noticeable changes within the state’s political framework. The Congress party managed to win just two seats, highlighting a dramatic shift in voter preferences across the region.

Transition of Leadership in the Assembly

Rathindra Bose takes over from Tapas Roy, the BJP MLA who was previously appointed as the Pro-tem Speaker of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly on May 14. This transition marks an essential step in the new formation of the Assembly following the recent electoral outcomes.

As the newly elected Speaker, Bose is expected to play a crucial role in managing the proceedings of the Assembly, ensuring that discussions remain orderly and parliamentary rules are upheld. His professional background is likely to assist in navigating the complexities involved in leading legislative sessions efficiently.

Following the elections, Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the ninth Chief Minister of West Bengal, further consolidating BJP’s position within the state’s political hierarchy. The changing dynamics within the Assembly highlight a new era of governance that will unfold in West Bengal in the coming years.
