The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced expectations of heavy to very heavy rainfall across Assam and neighbouring regions from July 30 to August 1. This forecast has prompted the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) to advise caution among residents. The anticipated storms may lead to various weather-related challenges in the state and surrounding areas.

In addition to Assam, significant rainfall is also expected in parts of Arunachal Pradesh, particularly within the districts of East Siang, Lohit, Namsai, Longding, Papumpare, Lower Subansiri, and Lower Dibang Valley. Their adverse weather may influence the Assam districts of Tinsukia, Dhemaji, and Lakhimpur.

An orange alert has been issued for Tinsukia district, signalling potential severe weather conditions. Similar alerts are also in effect for Nagaland’s Mon, Mokokchung, and Wokha districts, which may cause repercussions in nearby Assam districts, including Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Golaghat.

Weather Conditions and Their Impacts

The IMD forecasts that thunderstorms will accompany the rainfall, with precipitation levels ranging from 6 to 11 centimetres per day likely across several provinces. In contrast, isolated locations within Papumpare are expected to experience exceptionally heavy rainfall of 12 to 20 centimetres per day, which could affect surrounding districts in Assam.

The prevailing weather conditions may result in increased waterlogging, flooding, and flash floods. Other anticipated outcomes include slow vehicular movement and heightened risks of localised landslides, particularly in susceptible areas. Given these forecasts, the ASDMA has activated emergency response mechanisms and is monitoring conditions closely.

With the potential for severe weather impacting daily life, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant. The ASDMA has issued recommendations to residents in the affected districts to take necessary precautions, especially for those living in low-lying and hill areas. Individuals are advised to stay alert for signs of flooding or landslides, given the region’s vulnerability.

The ASDMA has urged daily commuters and long-distance travellers to adjust their travel plans according to the weather forecast, advising restraint in movement during periods of substantial rainfall.
