Rahul Gandhi To Attend TVK Chief Vijay’s Swearing-In Ceremony In Tamil Nadu

The CSR Journal Magazine

According to sources from the Indian National Congress (INC), Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, will attend the swearing-in ceremony of Vijay, the chief of the Tamil Nadu Vetrikaalaiya Katchi (TVK). This event follows Vijay’s ascendance to the role of Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, a position he is set to assume after successfully gaining essential support from various political parties. The formal ceremony is anticipated amid the political reconfiguration in Tamil Nadu.

Political Landscape in Tamil Nadu

The TVK party secured a dominant position in the State Assembly elections, emerging as the single-largest party with 108 seats. However, it fell short of the 118 seats required to establish a government independently. Consequently, Vijay approached Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to formally claim the mandate for forming the government, a move that follows the party’s consolidation of support from several key political factions.

Congress has shifted its political alignment, parting ways with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and extending its support to the TVK in this new governance arrangement. The shift is a notable change, as Congress previously contested the elections as part of a DMK-led coalition. Reports indicate this decision aims to bolster stability in the Tamil Nadu government through the new political formation.

Additionally, the CPI (Communist Party of India), CPI (Marxist), and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) have also pledged their allegiance to Vijay’s administration. Each of these parties secured two seats in the Assembly elections, further aiding the TVK in surpassing the critical majority threshold within the 234-member Assembly.

Support from Other Political Parties

The alliances formed by the TVK with other political parties enable it to exceed the majority mark. The collective seats from Congress and the supporting factions bolster Vijay’s party to ensure a majority in the Assembly. Specifically, the support from the CPI, CPI(M), and VCK, combined with the five seats held by Congress, provides a robust foundation for the new government configuration.

The CPI (M) has confirmed its backing through an official communication, positioning its support as crucial for the establishment of a stable governance structure. The CPI further extended what it termed “conditional support,” emphasising its commitment to a governance framework that prioritises stability, secularism, and democracy for all citizens in Tamil Nadu.

This political realignment comes in the wake of a fractured mandate in the recent Assembly elections, which necessitated new coalitions amongst the various political parties. As the swearing-in ceremony approaches, there is heightened interest in how this new government will navigate the pressing challenges facing the state.
