Rahul Gandhi Accuses PM Modi of Pressure Over US Trade Deal

The CSR Journal Magazine

Opposition Leader Questions Government’s Stand on Bilateral Trade Agreement

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday raised strong concerns about the proposed trade agreement between India and the United States. During a session in Parliament, the senior Congress leader alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is under significant pressure and suggested that the deal could compromise national interests.

Allegations of External Pressure on PM Modi

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi claimed that Prime Minister Modi has been “compromised” in the context of the US-India trade discussions. Without specifying the source or nature of the alleged compromise, Gandhi told the House that it was for the nation’s citizens to reflect on who may be exerting influence and in what manner.

He added that the Prime Minister is currently functioning under “tremendous pressure” and warned that the terms of the emerging trade agreement may negatively impact key sectors of the Indian economy. Gandhi did not elaborate on the specific provisions of the trade deal that he believes could be harmful.

Warning Against Adverse Impact on Indian Interests

The Congress MP cautioned that the proposed agreement with the United States has the potential to hurt the interests of India. Though he refrained from detailing aspects of the agreement, his remarks suggested that opposition parties are apprehensive about concessions that could be granted within the framework of the bilateral trade deal.

Rahul Gandhi urged the government to place the details of the deal before Parliament to ensure transparency and allow public and parliamentary scrutiny. He did not cite particular industries or regulations that may be affected but signalled a general concern about the implications for domestic policy and economic sovereignty.

Background on India-US Trade Negotiations

India and the United States have been engaged in ongoing negotiations to finalise a trade agreement aimed at resolving long-standing market access and tariff-related issues. The agreement is expected to address various sectors, including agriculture, technology, and pharmaceutical trade, among others.

While both sides have expressed optimism about strengthening economic ties, formal announcements or detailed frameworks have yet to be made public. Trade discussions have seen incremental progress in recent years, especially during high-level diplomatic engagement and state visits.

Government Yet to Respond to Concerns Raised

As of Tuesday evening, there was no official response from the Prime Minister’s Office or the Ministry of Commerce and Industry regarding the concerns raised in Parliament. Government officials have previously stated that any trade agreements signed by India will prioritise national interests and safeguard crucial domestic sectors.

Parliamentary discussions around the trade agreement are expected to continue, with opposition parties likely to seek further clarification on the terms and strategic implications of the proposed deal with the United States.
