Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary, a prominent leader within the Uttar Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has stated that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is a major component of the party’s manifesto for the upcoming 2029 elections. He emphasised that the implementation of this significant law is a priority for the government. Chaudhary’s remarks came in the wake of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s assertion regarding the UCC’s anticipated introduction across BJP-led states within the next few years.

Legislative Timeline for UCC Implementation

Amit Shah announced on September 10, 2026, that he is confident the UCC will be enacted in all 21 states governed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) before the deadline set for 2029. According to Shah, the UCC seeks to provide a unified framework of personal laws for all citizens, regardless of their religious affiliation. These laws will encompass various aspects such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.

Chaudhary reiterated that the BJP holds the belief that the implementation of the UCC is crucial for ensuring comprehensive protection of women’s rights. He noted that this legislative initiative is part of the government’s ongoing commitment to legal and social reforms. He added that under the direction of the Union Home Minister, significant progress is being made toward this goal.

The UCC has long been a pivotal agenda item for the BJP, reflecting its commitment to reform and modernise personal laws in India. The party has actively advocated for the implementation of the UCC as part of its broader vision for societal change.

Opposition’s Response to UCC Initiatives

The announcement regarding the UCC was met with criticism from opposition leader Rajendra Pal Gautam of the Congress party. Gautam claimed that the BJP has a history of raising contentious issues such as the UCC and matters pertaining to communal identity during election seasons. He suggested that these topics are employed to divert public attention from more pressing concerns.

Gautam dismissed Shah’s statement as a superficial electoral strategy, arguing that the BJP only appears to advocate for these issues in the run-up to elections. He challenged Shah to address recent incidents involving violence against students, including the use of lathi charges and pellet guns, suggesting that focusing on these urgent matters would be more appropriate than discussing the UCC.

The exchange indicates a growing tension between the ruling party and opposition factions as the elections approach. The BJP’s commitment to the UCC remains a divisive issue, with strong support from its base juxtaposed against significant resistance from opposition parties.
