The Delhi government has announced plans to develop hostel facilities accommodating 10,000 students, a move aimed at providing secure and affordable living arrangements for those pursuing higher education in the capital. This initiative follows the tragic collapse of a private paying-guest accommodation in Satya Niketan, which resulted in the deaths of seven students.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta articulated the need for expanding student accommodation in Delhi, citing that lakhs of students migrate to the city annually, and many struggle to secure suitable housing even after gaining admission to academic institutions. The proposed hostels would cater to both male and female students enrolled in various colleges and universities throughout Delhi.

In a video message, Gupta emphasised the importance of meeting the accommodation needs alongside educational infrastructure in the vision of transforming Delhi into a prominent education hub. Her remarks highlight the increasing demand for safe and supportive living spaces for students in the city.

Focus on Student Well-being and Safety

The Delhi government has stressed that the new hostel facilities will not only increase the total number of beds available but will also aim to create a nurturing environment for students. This government initiative coincides with efforts by the University of Delhi (DU) to enhance its residential infrastructure. Currently, DU offers 3,422 hostel seats, with its affiliated colleges providing an additional 3,788 seats. Planned projects are anticipated to expand the university’s hostel capacity to 7,344, while the overall capacity across its colleges would reach 5,410, culminating in a total of 12,754 seats.

With the Delhi government now actively working on defining locations and establishing a policy framework for the proposed 10,000-bed facilities, the subsequent steps will involve the finalisation of sites, construction strategies, and criteria for student eligibility.
