The World Athletics Championships are set to take place in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2029, marking the first occasion the event will be hosted on the African continent. This significant decision underlines Kenya’s prominence in the world of athletics, particularly in distance running, where it has achieved remarkable success historically.

Kenya ranks second on the all-time medal table for the World Championships, trailing only the United States. The country’s reputation as a leading athletics nation was highlighted by World Athletics President Sebastian Coe, who described the selection of Nairobi as a momentous event in the sports community.

Coe stressed that bringing the championships to Africa for the first time is a milestone and indicated that athletics is deeply integrated into Kenya’s culture and identity. His comments followed the announcement made after the Ultimate Championship held in Hungary.

Local Support and Infrastructure Development

Salim Mvurya, Kenya’s sports minister, expressed his support for the decision, noting that it would shine a spotlight on a nation where running forms an essential part of its cultural fabric. Coe also mentioned the enthusiasm for athletics in Kenya, as research indicated that it represents the most passionate market for the sport among the countries surveyed.

Nairobi’s successful bid for the championships was bolstered by its existing sporting infrastructure. The championships are expected to take place at a stadium currently undergoing upgrades in preparation for Kenya’s co-hosting of the Africa Cup of Nations the following year. The combination of a strong bid and enhanced facilities were pivotal in securing the rights to host.

Coe remarked on the importance of selecting the right host and circumstances for the World Championships. He added that Nairobi had unequivocally demonstrated its capability and enthusiasm to stage the event. This optimistic outlook, however, comes amid ongoing scrutiny regarding Kenya’s approach to doping within athletics.

Challenges and Future Events

In recent years, the issue of doping has cast a shadow over Kenya’s athletics. Several elite athletes have faced suspensions, including marathon world record holder Ruth Chepng’etich, who is currently serving a three-year ban. The growing concerns over doping practices in the country may bring additional challenges as Nairobi prepares to host the championships.

Nairobi beat competing bids from London and Rome to host the event, with London last having the opportunity to stage the championships in 2017. According to Coe, the traditional format of the championships will be preserved. Meanwhile, the upcoming edition in Beijing to feature an extensive ten-day schedule of events. It contrasts with the shorter, invitation-only Ultimate Championship held in Budapest.

The Ultimate Championship, which focused on cash prizes rather than traditional medals, has yet to announce its 2028 host city. Despite its inaugural edition, Coe believes that the format has been positively received. Moreover, adjustments will be considered for future versions. Following the 2029 event in Nairobi, the championships will subsequently take place in Munich in 2031. It continues the legacy of the premier track and field competition worldwide.
