India has dispatched 10 tonnes of anti-retroviral medicines to Botswana to bolster its public health initiatives for the treatment of HIV/AIDS. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar announced this significant aid in a post on the social media platform X. He stated that this action underscores India’s commitment to enhancing health cooperation with partners in the Global South.

In his statement, Jaishankar expressed that the dispatch is part of ongoing efforts to support other nations in improving their health systems. The minister has actively promoted the idea that India is keen on sharing medical resources and expertise with countries facing health challenges.

Recent Developments in Health Cooperation

On September 15, the 79th session of the World Health Organisation’s Regional Committee for South-East Asia concluded successfully. Member States came together to adopt the Dili Declaration on Human Resources for Health: Equity in Specialised Care, which aims to tackle healthcare inequities and enhance health system resilience.

The four-day meeting featured discussions among Health Ministers, senior health officials, and delegates representing various countries within the WHO South-East Asia Region. It resulted in the adoption of key resolutions addressing various aspects such as medical devices, blood safety, and sustainable health financing.

Additionally, delegates have extended the regional action plan on viral hepatitis, HIV, and sexually transmitted infections to the year 2030. The focus has also been placed on promoting digital health and artificial intelligence to improve healthcare delivery.

Strengthening Partnerships and Global Cooperation

In a related development, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa discussed the comprehensive nature of the India-South Africa Strategic Partnership during a meeting on September 17. This meeting took place on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

The two leaders reviewed various collaborative efforts, including a proposed trade agreement between India and the Southern African Customs Union (SACU), as well as topics such as mining, critical minerals, and advancements in digital infrastructure and emerging technologies.

During their discussions, Modi and Ramaphosa shared perspectives on several key global issues and agreed on the importance of maintaining close coordination within multilateral platforms. This meeting exemplifies India’s ongoing commitment to collaborating with countries across the Global South for mutual benefit.
