A family in Punjab was left in disbelief when they learned that their son, who they thought was deceased, was actually alive and incarcerated. Ravi Kumar, a resident of Kadupur village in Kapurthala district, had gone missing on August 5. Following an extensive search for him, his family was devastated to receive news that he had died.

On August 11, Ravi’s father, identified as TT, and his brother, Amandeep, reported his disappearance to local authorities. They were later shown a photograph of a decomposed body that had been discovered near Kanjli Road. Due to the state of the remains, the family recognised the body based on the clothes it was believed he had been wearing at the time he went missing.

Cremation of the Unidentified Body

On August 13, the family proceeded with the cremation of the body, believing it to be their son. Just two days later, on August 15, they held a memorial ceremony known as Bhog, as part of their mourning process. Their sorrow was palpable as they believed they had performed their son’s last rites, reflecting a devastating and profound loss.

However, the family’s grief took an unexpected turn on September 2 when they received a call from an official at Kapurthala Central Jail. The official informed them that Ravi Kumar was alive and incarcerated, having been arrested by Jalandhar police on vagrancy charges approximately a month earlier.

In shock, the family immediately rushed to the jail the following day. Upon their arrival, they were able to confirm that the individual they had mourned and cremated was not Ravi, leaving them with many unanswered questions.

Investigation into the Cremated Body’s Identity

This revelation has raised significant concerns for the family regarding the identity of the individual whose body they cremated, believing him to be Ravi. Local police have now embarked on an investigation to identify the deceased person. DSP Sheetal Singh reported that the body found was in an advanced stage of decomposition, which complicated the identification process further.

The police now face the challenge of establishing who the young man was and how he came to be in such a state. DSP Singh stated that the family would be called in for further questioning to assist with the investigation. He also clarified that he saw no signs of negligence on the part of the police throughout the entire inquiry.

The extraordinary sequence of events has left Ravi’s family grappling with conflicting emotions. After conducting mourning rituals under the false belief that their son had passed away, they have now been presented with the shocking reality of his survival, while the identity of the man they cremated remains a profound mystery.
