Amit Shah Visits Family of Murdered Anti-Drug Activist in Punjab

The CSR Journal Magazine

Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the family of Bikramjit Singh, an anti-drug activist who was murdered, in Gurdaspur district, Punjab. This visit marks the beginning of a series of meetings Shah is conducting with families affected by incidents related to drug trafficking in the state. Singh, aged 40, was fatally attacked with a sharp weapon on October 15, in Pannawan village. He and two others reportedly confronted individuals involved in drug peddling, leading to the violent incident.

During the visit, Shah expressed his condolences to Singh’s mother and engaged with other family members. A video captured the moment, highlighting the emotional atmosphere surrounding the tragic loss. The Home Minister’s visit underscores the government’s focus on addressing the drug menace in Punjab, which has been a growing concern in recent years.

Shah’s engagement with the family is part of a broader initiative to acknowledge the sacrifices made by individuals standing against drug trafficking. The government aims to bolster community support and encourage more citizens to speak out against illegal drug activities.

Upcoming Meetings in Sangrur and Mansa

Following his visit to Gurdaspur, Amit Shah is scheduled to travel to Sangrur district to meet the family of Gulzar Singh. Singh, a Dalit man, died by suicide on September 7, 2023. His family alleges that he consumed poison after experiencing harassment and casteist slurs for questioning Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema regarding drug supply in his area. This incident has raised concerns about the social implications of drug trafficking and the pressures faced by individuals who challenge the status quo.

The Home Minister’s visit to Sangrur aims to provide support to the grieving family and address the underlying issues that led to Singh’s tragic death. Shah’s meetings are intended to highlight the government’s commitment to tackling the drug crisis and ensuring justice for those affected by it.

In addition to the meeting in Sangrur, Shah will also visit Mansa to meet the family of Parvinder Singh Jhota, another anti-drug activist. Jhota was shot dead on October 13 inside a medical store while conducting a Facebook Live session. He was known for his outspoken stance against drug abuse and the illegal sale of narcotics at chemist shops. Reports indicate that he confronted the store owner, Ashwani Kumar, regarding the sale of drugs to an elderly man, leading to the fatal shooting.

Government’s Response to Drug-Related Violence

The series of meetings by Amit Shah reflects the government’s recognition of the escalating violence linked to drug trafficking in Punjab. The state has witnessed a surge in incidents involving activists who oppose drug peddling, raising alarms about the safety of individuals advocating for a drug-free society. Shah’s visits are aimed at not only offering condolences but also reinforcing the government’s commitment to combatting drug-related violence.

As the Home Minister meets with these families, it is anticipated that discussions will also focus on the measures being implemented to enhance safety for anti-drug activists and to curb the drug trade in Punjab. The government has been under pressure to address the growing concerns surrounding drug abuse and its societal impacts.

Shah’s initiative to meet with affected families is part of a larger strategy to foster community engagement and support in the fight against drug trafficking. The government is expected to announce further actions aimed at improving the situation in Punjab, ensuring that the sacrifices made by individuals like Singh and Jhota are not forgotten.
