Protests Erupt During Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s Kolkata Visit

The CSR Journal Magazine

Black flags were displayed, and slogans were chanted by demonstrators during the visit of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar to Kolkata on Sunday evening. This incident occurred as Kumar was en route to his accommodation from the airport after arriving for an official three-day visit to West Bengal.

Local Trinamool Congress MLA Tapas Chatterjee spearheaded one of the protests, which took place in New Town. He indicated that participants from various sectors were involved in the demonstration, which was primarily focused on the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state.

Kumar’s visit included a full-bench meeting of the Election Commission to evaluate the readiness for the forthcoming assembly elections in West Bengal. In anticipation of the protests, a significant number of security personnel were deployed, effectively barricading the demonstrators and preventing them from obstructing the route that the CEC was taking from the Kolkata Airport to his hotel.

Chatterjee commented on the situation, stating, “Our chief minister is holding a sit-in in central Kolkata and we are protesting here against the Chief Election Commissioner, who is anti-democracy and anti-Constitution.” This assertion reflects the escalating tensions between state authorities and the Election Commission.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has openly criticized CEC Gyanesh Kumar, accusing him of acting in favor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and undermining democratic processes in the state. This friction highlights the broader political landscape as the region approaches the assembly elections.

The atmosphere in Kolkata during Kumar’s visit underscores the contentious relationship between the local government and the Election Commission, amidst allegations of bias and calls for fair electoral practices. With the assembly elections on the horizon, such protests may continue as various factions express their dissent regarding electoral management and governance.
