Mamata Banerjee, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal and leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), expressed her deep emotions during her visit to the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata. She described the experience as “deeply moving,” highlighting the warmth and compassion that pervaded her time there. In a post on X, Banerjee conveyed her respect and admiration for Mother Teresa, noting her significant impact on countless lives worldwide.

During the visit, Banerjee had the opportunity to meet Sr. Mary Joseph M.C., the Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity. She acknowledged the vital role that Mother Teresa played in promoting service and compassion, stating that her life continues to inspire millions. Banerjee reiterated the enduring message of love associated with Mother Teresa’s legacy, which she believes remains essential in today’s society.

Banerjee further remarked on a shared vision for a more equitable and peaceful India, grounded in mutual respect and dignity. Her reflections engage with Mother Teresa’s work and extend an invitation for collective action toward humanitarian efforts.

Accusations Against the BJP

On September 3, Banerjee addressed allegations against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming that it has instigated “hooliganism” against the TMC. She reported that approximately 4,000 party offices across West Bengal have been subject to forcible occupation and looting. This statement was made during a Facebook Live interaction with party workers and supporters, drawing attention to the alleged violence against TMC property and members.

Banerjee claimed that numerous documents and records were taken from the TMC offices, asserting that furniture and the party’s flags were also damaged in the violence. She expressed deep concern over the disrespect shown to the symbols representing the dignity of the TMC, indicating that such actions contravene the basic principles of democracy.

Continuing her allegations, Banerjee mentioned a specific incident involving the party’s IT office, where she claimed four TMC workers were trapped during what she described as a midnight raid. Allegedly, the office was vandalised, and important materials were removed. “Why were our computers taken? Why were our official papers and documents ransacked?” Banerjee questioned in her address, calling for accountability and action.

Call for Investigation

Banerjee also challenged the authorities to investigate the alleged actions against TMC workers, stating that more than 14,000 cases had been filed against them. She urged for thorough inquiries into incidents involving students, particularly those occurring at notable educational institutions such as Jadavpur University, Presidency University, and Barasat University.

The TMC leader’s remarks highlight ongoing tensions between her party and the BJP, especially concerning political violence and the treatment of party members. The allegations add to an already volatile political landscape in West Bengal, where various events have escalated since the last elections.
