Pratika Rawal Backs More Test Matches to Boost Player Development

The CSR Journal Magazine

Pratika Rawal has articulated her strong connection to Test cricket, describing it as a format that truly reflects a cricketer’s character and resilience. She made her Test debut during the Day-Night match in Perth against Australia, where she played alongside teammates Sayali Satghare, Kranti Gaud, and Kashvee Gautam. After scoring 18 runs in her first innings, she rebounded impressively in the second innings to achieve her maiden Test fifty, finishing with 63 runs, aided by eight boundaries. Despite her notable performance, India lost the match by 10 wickets. Pratika credited her father and coach for instilling in her the importance of excelling in Test cricket from a young age. She reminisced about being inspired by cricketing legends like Viv Richards, Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, and Ricky Ponting.

Views on the Essence of Test Cricket

“Test cricket is one of the most beautiful formats the game has to offer, and I’ve said that a million times – and I’ll say it again. Since childhood, my father and coach always emphasized that this was the format I needed to excel in. Being groomed in that manner naturally leads one to feel a profound connection and a sense of responsibility to succeed in this format,” Pratika remarked. She expressed her admiration for how the aforementioned legends approached Test cricket, noting that it tests a player’s patience, character, determination, and focus. “It is the perfect measure of who you are as a cricketer and whether you possess the fighting spirit needed to endure a Test match,” she added.

Advocacy for Increased Test Matches

Pratika further advocated for the need for more Test matches, asserting that such experiences provide invaluable benefits to players. The Perth Test marked India’s first since its home game against South Africa in July 2024 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Looking ahead, India is scheduled to play a one-off Test against England at Lord’s in July. Pratika highlighted that the lessons learned in Test matches contribute significantly to both personal development and team performance. “The more Test cricket you play, the better it is. The kind of experience gained from a Test match allows for immense growth, not just as a player but as an individual too. Hence, a higher number of matches in this format can do wonders for us,” she stated.

Achievements in Limited-Overs Cricket

While Pratika Rawal has made a notable impact predominantly in One Day Internationals (ODIs), her statistics indicate her prowess in that format as well. She has accumulated 1,189 runs across 89 ODIs with an impressive average of 47.56, which includes two centuries and eight half-centuries. Additionally, she played a pivotal role in India’s title-winning campaign at the Women’s World Cup, scoring a crucial century against New Zealand.
