Prashant Kishor Engages With Sunetra Pawar Amid Political Developments in Maharashtra

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prashant Kishor has gained attention in Maharashtra following his successful electoral performance in Bihar. On Thursday, the founder of Jan Suraaj met with Sunetra Pawar, the Deputy Chief Minister and leader of the NCP, at her official residence, Devgiri, in South Mumbai. This meeting, which lasted for five hours, marks their second engagement in three months. The initial meeting took place in May.

Sunetra Pawar succeeded her husband, Ajit Pawar, who tragically died in a plane crash in January. Since taking over the leadership of the NCP, she has been navigating a dynamic political landscape in the state. Kishor’s meeting with her has drawn significant attention, particularly given recent political changes.

Speculation Surrounding the Meeting

The agenda of the meeting remains undisclosed, although confirmation came from NCP general secretary Sanjay Khodke. It is believed that the discussions were facilitated by Parth Pawar, Sunetra’s son and a Member of Parliament, who has previously indicated that Kishor’s involvement with the Pawar family is one of friendship rather than politics.

Parth Pawar has described Kishor as a close associate, insisting that he has distanced himself from political advisory roles in recent years. This has not alleviated the speculation regarding Kishor’s potential influence within the NCP, especially after his recent electoral success in Bankipur, a seat long held by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

With this victory, Kishor’s credibility within Maharashtra’s political arena appears to have surged, raising questions about the NCP’s future strategy. BJP leaders have suggested that this interaction could lead to tensions within the ruling coalition, urging caution to maintain alliance stability.

NCP’s Political Landscape and Future Strategies

The timing of Kishor’s meetings with Sunetra Pawar holds substantial significance amidst growing tensions between the NCP and BJP. Recent developments indicate a potential reconciliation between the NDA and a faction of the NCP led by Sharad Pawar. These shifting alliances have sparked discussions about the future of the political parties in Maharashtra.

Sharad Pawar has been engaging with prominent BJP figures, including Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Moreover, sources have reported undisclosed meetings between senior leaders of the NCP and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, hinting at discussions on political alignment that could further complicate the current political dynamics.

The increasing unease within the NCP surrounding these developments has prompted speculation that Sunetra Pawar’s consultations with Kishor are aimed at reinforcing the party’s political strategies. Having largely focused on social initiatives in Baramati until recently, her recent experiences in the political sphere underscore a shift towards more proactive political engagement.

These engagements with Kishor suggest that the NCP may seek to utilise his expertise in navigating the complexities of Maharashtra’s political landscape, particularly as the party strives to establish its footing in preparation for upcoming electoral contests.
