Political Turmoil Deepens for TMC: Rumors of Lok Sabha Defection Swirl Ahead of Key Delhi Meeting

The CSR Journal Magazine

Fresh off a major upheaval in the state assembly, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) now faces a potential rebellion within its parliamentary ranks. Speculation is mounting that a significant political development could unfold in the national capital on June 8, coinciding with party supremo Mamata Banerjee’s scheduled visit.

Following the recent formation of the breakaway “Naba TMC Block” in the West Bengal Assembly led by Ritabrata Banerjee and reportedly backed by over 50 MLAs whispers of a similar coup are now echoing through the corridors of Delhi, where several TMC MPs have started gathering.

High-Profile Names Under the Scanner

The internal rift, which initially burst into the open with Barasat MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar’s public rebellion, appears to be widening. Discontent is brewing among various factions, fueled by strict party oversight and leadership reshuffles:

Growing Resentment:

Cooch Behar MP Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia was reportedly left deeply aggrieved after being asked to provide photographic proof of his son’s hospitalization to justify missing a party meeting.

Celebrity Distances:

High-profile celebrity lawmakers including Deepak Adhikari (Dev), Rachana Banerjee, Yusuf Pathan, and June Maliah have reportedly maintained a distance from core party activities, citing busy shooting schedules. The stance of Saayoni Ghosh also remains ambiguous.

Leadership Grievances:

While Naina Bandyopadhyay currently remains by Mamata Banerjee’s side, insiders are closely watching her stance. Her husband, Sudip Bandyopadhyay, was recently replaced by Abhishek Banerjee as the TMC’s Lok Sabha leader, causing visible friction.

Minority Bloc Shifts:

Questions are also being raised about whether minority MPs from Malda and Murshidabad will remain loyal to the TMC or pivot toward the Congress party. Meanwhile, rumors suggest at least one MP is already in communication with the BJP, though the saffron party has distanced itself from the internal crisis.

The Dissidents’ Strategy: Avoiding the Anti-Defection Trap

Mamata Banerjee and Lok Sabha party leader Abhishek Banerjee are slated to be in Delhi this Monday to attend a crucial opposition INDIA bloc meeting.

However, rebel sources indicate that the dissident faction is in no rush to execute their plan.

The disgruntled MPs are meticulously calculating their numbers to ensure they have enough strength to bypass the anti-defection law. According to insiders, the ultimate blueprint is to formally write to the Lok Sabha Speaker to remove Abhishek Banerjee from his position as the leader of the party in the Lower House, but this “operation” will only be triggered once the required legal threshold of MPs is guaranteed.
