Police Crackdown Following Controversial Speech by MLA Humayun Kabir

In a swift development following a stern warning from Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari in the Legislative Assembly, the West Bengal Police have initiated a major crackdown over a controversial and provocative speech delivered by Nowda MLA Humayun Kabir. Within 24 hours of the Chief Minister’s address, law enforcement authorities arrested three key organizers of the event where the remarks were made.

The Controversial Remarks and Political Backlash

The controversy stems from a public rally held in Rejinagar on June 26. During his address, Kabir targeted the opposition BJP with highly aggressive rhetoric, threatening mass violence.

“The day I take to the field with Muslims, I will unleash such a severe beating that you will not have anyone left to carry your party flags,” Kabir reportedly said. He further escalated his stance by adding, “When I lose my temper, I won’t respect the SP or even the Chief Minister.”

Following the speech, a First Information Report (FIR) was promptly lodged against the lawmaker.

On Monday, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari addressed the issue firmly on the floor of the Assembly, signaling a zero-tolerance approach toward hate speech and administrative defiance. Directing a clear warning to the MLA, Adhikari stated, “We will first apprehend those who invited you to that meeting, and then we will come to you. Consider this your final warning.”

The Chief Minister’s remarks emphasized a shift in governance, indicating that inflammatory rhetoric would no longer go unchecked.

Police Action and Arrests

Acting swiftly after the political warning, police conducted late-night raids on Monday and arrested three individuals connected to the rally:

Aminul Sheikh: A resident of Lokenathpur village in Rejinagar, who had officially secured police permission to organize the meeting.

Golam Mostafa: A resident of the Kashipur area, detained for his involvement in organizing the event.

Anisur Rahman: Apprehended later from the Shaktipur police station jurisdiction.

Meanwhile, Humayun Kabir attempted to clarify his comments on Monday, claiming his statements were misconstrued and were specifically directed at former Trinamool Congress workers who have allegedly shifted allegiances to become “BJP goons.” However, political observers note that the damage control may have come too late, as critics suggest the lawmaker is softening his stance out of fear of impending legal consequences.
