PM Modi Urges Citizens to Embrace ‘Vocal for Local’ During Festivals on Mann Ki Baat

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi encouraged the public to adhere to the “Vocal for Local” initiative as the festive season approaches. During the 131st episode of his address, Mann Ki Baat on Sunday February 22, PM Modi urged citizens to support domestic products and contribute to the nation’s pursuit of self-reliance, known as Aatmanirbharta. In his message, he acknowledged the presence of Ramadan, wishing everyone well during this sacred month, and noted the upcoming celebration of Holi, emphasizing the joyous festivities characterized by color, laughter, and family gatherings.

Celebrating Togetherness and Local Support

PM Modi prompted citizens to partake in the upcoming festivals with a spirit of joy alongside their loved ones. He highlighted the significance of remembering the “Vocal for Local” mantra in their celebrations. “All of you should celebrate all the festivals happily with your family and loved ones. And yes, always remember some mantras, like Vocal for Local,” he stated. This appeal aims to foster a greater awareness and preference for locally manufactured goods and services during celebrations.

Warnings Against Foreign Products

The Prime Minister emphasized the need to minimize reliance on foreign-made items during festivals, particularly Holi. He remarked, “Many such items which are foreign have entered our Holi festival or any other festival. Keep them away from festivals, keep them away from Holi also, and adopt Swadeshi.” He argued that purchasing domestic products not only benefits consumers but also bolsters the national campaign for self-reliance.

‘Vocal for Local’ Movement and Its Objectives

The ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative is a national campaign initiated by the Central Government, with support from NITI Aayog. Its primary goal is to encourage consumers to prioritize goods and services produced in India. The movement aims to strengthen the economic base by empowering local businesses, creating jobs, and enhancing India’s manufacturing capabilities, thus aligning with the broader vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat or Self-Reliant India.

Observance of Ramadan and Holi

Ramadan, a significant month for Muslims across the globe, is a period dedicated to fasting, prayer, reflection, and communal bonds. This year, Ramadan commenced on February 18, and will last for approximately 29 to 30 days, during which adherents fast daily from dawn until sunset and participate in nightly prayers. Concurrently, Holi, known as the Hindu festival of colors, is scheduled for celebration on March 4, 2026, with the traditional Holika Dahan bonfires taking place on the evening of March 3. Holi festivities are characterized by the joyous exchange of colors, music, and communal gatherings, contributing to the vibrant cultural fabric of India.
