Philippines School Shooting Livestreamed by Student Results in Two Deaths in Zamboanga

The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic incident unfolded at a high school in Zamboanga, Philippines, on Tuesday when a student, armed with two pistols, shot and killed a fellow student before taking his own life. This horrific act was reportedly livestreamed by the perpetrator using a body-mounted camera. The school shooting marks the second fatal incident of its kind in the country within a two-month span, raising concerns regarding safety measures in educational institutions.

Details of the Shooting

The suspect, identified as Grade 9 student Mohammad Mael Jalani, opened fire in the high school building of Ateneo de Zamboanga University. According to initial police reports, he attempted to shoot a teacher who was seated in front of a classroom but missed his target. He then proceeded to shoot a Grade 10 student on the fourth floor before moving to the fifth floor where he reportedly ended his life by jumping from the building.

Zamboanga City Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso, along with police officials, confirmed that the suspect shot himself after committing the initial attack. This incident prompted immediate evacuation procedures, with hundreds of students being removed from the premises as gunfire erupted within the school.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla informed reporters that parts of the incident were visible online, as the suspect had begun livestreaming moments prior to the shooting. Investigators will review the livestream footage, along with the suspect’s gaming and chat history, to ascertain possible motives behind this tragic behaviour.

Reactions from Officials

In response to the situation, police have urged parents and guardians to stay calm and follow the school’s specific protocols for collecting their children. National Police Chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stated that law enforcement is working to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting. He reassured the community that public safety and well-being are top priorities and emphasised the importance of refraining from sharing unverified information that could contribute to unnecessary panic.

This shooting incident comes in the wake of a similar tragedy that occurred in June in Tacloban City, where three high school students lost their lives and at least twenty others were injured. Two students, aged 14 and 15, have been apprehended and accused of being involved in that earlier attack. Such incidents highlight the concerning prevalence of gun-related crimes in the Philippines, partly due to the availability of unlicensed firearms.

Days following the Tacloban shooting, authorities announced a temporary ban on the online gaming app Gorebox, seeking to evaluate whether it had a role in promoting violence among youth. The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Centre took this action following evidence suggesting that one of the suspects was a frequent user of the app.

Context of School Shootings in the Region

This recent shooting adds to a troubling trend, particularly as it occurs less than two weeks after a school shooting in Thailand, where a teenager killed multiple individuals in a similar tragic event. The Prime Minister of Thailand, Anutin Charnvirakul, initiated measures to restrict firearms following that incident, highlighting the growing dialogue around gun control in the region.

As the investigation in Zamboanga progresses, authorities are focused on understanding the factors that led to this shooting. They are conducting a thorough examination of the livestream footage, as well as delving into the suspect’s online activities, which may reveal critical insights into his actions. This tragic event has once again raised questions about the safety of educational environments in the Philippines and abroad.
