Designed collaboratively by various higher education institutions, Erasmus Mundus programmes involve at least three universities from different countries. This structure incorporates academic and non-academic partners to deliver a comprehensive educational experience that includes study periods, research, and traineeships in diverse locations.

A crucial aspect of the programme is the international mobility it promotes. Students are typically required to engage in studies in at least two European nations, with some programmes extending to partner institutions beyond Europe.

Financial Support Offered by the Programme

One of the notable advantages of the Erasmus Mundus scholarship is the extensive financial assistance it provides to selected students. Those awarded the scholarship can expect a monthly stipend of €1,400 for up to 24 months, along with coverage of tuition fees and other academic costs, including library access and insurance.

Students graduate from these programmes with either a joint degree or multiple degrees based on the specific course structure. A joint degree is issued by at least two institutions, while multiple degrees lead to receiving diplomas from each involved university.

Eligibility and Application Details

The scholarship is available to candidates worldwide, including both EU and non-EU citizens. Generally, applicants need to possess a bachelor’s degree or be in their final undergraduate year, with the requirement that they graduate before commencing the master’s programme.

Individuals holding qualifications equivalent to a bachelor’s degree may also qualify, depending on national rules in the degree-awarding country. Language proficiency typically varies with each course, and applicants may be expected to demonstrate their English skills through recognised tests like IELTS.

Application timelines can fluctuate as there is no uniform deadline across Erasmus Mundus programmes. New courses are added annually, and prospective students are encouraged to apply directly to specific master’s programmes, usually between October and January for courses starting in the following academic year.

As of the 2026–2028 academic cycle, 75 Indian students received the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) scholarships. The Delegation of the European Union to India and Bhutan indicated that India has been the leading recipient of these scholarships since the programme’s initiation in 2004, and remains among the top three recipient countries for the current year’s intake.
