India Emerging As Global Technology Development Hub, Says Samsung CEO JB Park

The CSR Journal Magazine

India is increasingly moving beyond its traditional role as a major consumer market for global technology companies and is emerging as a country that helps develop technologies for users around the world, Samsung South West Asia President and CEO JB Park said as the company marked three decades of operations in the country.

Samsung, which entered India in 1995, now sees the country not merely as a market of 1.4 billion people but as an important centre for technology development, research, design and innovation, Park said on Monday.

Samsung Marks 30 Years In India

“Today, we don’t look at India just as a market of 1.4 billion people. We see India as a place where the future of technology is being imagined, developed and led,” Park said as Samsung completed 30 years in India.

Over the past three decades, Samsung has expanded its presence in the country across manufacturing, research and development, and design.

Park said the company’s engagement with India has changed alongside the growth of the country’s technology ecosystem.

“We evolved from bringing technology to India to creating technology with India,” he said.

Indian R&D Teams Work On Global Technologies

Samsung’s research and development engineers in Bengaluru and Noida work alongside teams across the company’s global R&D network, contributing to technologies and consumer experiences designed for both Indian and overseas markets.

According to Park, India’s size and diversity have also influenced the way Samsung approaches product development and innovation.

“India challenges us to innovate differently,” he said.

“Building products for a country of this scale and diversity means designing solutions that are intuitive, inclusive and relevant to millions of people with very different needs. Those innovations often go on to benefit consumers around the world.”

The company’s experience in India, Park said, has therefore increasingly shaped technologies that eventually find applications in other markets.

India Plays Growing Role In AI Development

Park also highlighted the contribution of Indian engineers to Samsung’s work in artificial intelligence as AI becomes increasingly integrated into consumer technology.

He said the success of artificial intelligence would ultimately depend on whether it addresses practical needs.

“AI will only be meaningful if it solves real problems for real people. And, there are few places that challenge us to do that better than India,” Park said.

Samsung expects India’s technology ecosystem to play a larger role in shaping the next phase of global innovation, he added.

Focus On Technology Skills And Innovation

Alongside its technology and business operations, Samsung has been running programmes in India aimed at developing skills and encouraging innovation.

These include Samsung Innovation Campus and Solve for Tomorrow, initiatives focused on technology education and innovation.

Looking ahead, Park said the company’s ambitions in India extended beyond its commercial operations and towards supporting a new generation of innovators.

“I believe our legacy will be defined by the dreams we helped unlock,” he said.

Park said Samsung hopes to contribute to a generation of Indian innovators capable of developing solutions that can be used across global markets, as India takes on an increasingly prominent role in the development of future technologies.
