Pakistan captain Fatima Sana has been penalised for her send-off gesture directed at Indian opener Shafali Verma during the Women’s T20 Asia Cup match held in Dubai on Saturday. The incident took place during the second over of India’s innings, a moment that led to disciplinary action from the match officials.

Sana was fined 10 per cent of her match fee and received one demerit point as a result of the incident. This breach constitutes her second offence in a period of 24 months, which has brought her total demerit points to two. Shafali Verma was dismissed after hitting a catch back to the bowler, prompting Sana to celebrate the wicket with an inappropriate gesture towards the pavilion.

The on-field umpires, Nimali Perera and Shathira Jakir Jesy, along with third umpire Rokeya Sultana and fourth umpire Rabab Ahsan, noted the gesture and subsequently charged Sana for breaching the regulations. The captain acknowledged the offence during a discussion with match referee Supriya Rani Das.

The action taken against Sana was based on a violation of Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct. This article addresses behaviours that include language, gestures, or actions deemed to disparage a batter or provoke an aggressive reaction following a dismissal in international play. The match officials deemed her conduct unacceptable within the professional standards expected in sportsmanship.

Commentators have also expressed criticism regarding her behaviour during the game. Notably, commentator Vivek Razdan commented on the irony of Sana’s celebration given that her team had been dismissed for a mere 55 runs, the lowest score in Pakistan’s Women’s T20I history.

He questioned the appropriateness of her gesture in light of her team’s performance. Despite the controversy surrounding Sana, she managed to be involved in all three dismissals that occurred during India’s chase. However, India ultimately secured a decisive victory, winning by seven wickets after comprehensively dismantling the Pakistani batting order.
