OpenAI Introduces Writing Style Feature for ChatGPT Work Users

The CSR Journal Magazine

OpenAI has announced the release of a new Writing Style feature for its ChatGPT Work application, allowing the AI to write more like its human users. This functionality aims to address the rising concerns regarding “AI slop,” or content perceived to be artificially generated, fostering a more personalised interaction. Users can integrate ChatGPT into their daily communication tools to ensure the generated content mirrors their unique writing styles.

The official ChatGPT account on X, formerly known as Twitter, revealed that this feature is designed to analyse individual writing styles and incorporate those elements into the generated drafts. OpenAI claims that it can capture unique aspects of a user’s writing, such as specific phrases, capitalisation preferences, and personalised sign-offs.

Currently, this capability is exclusive to the ChatGPT Work tool, and there is no information on whether it will be made available to standard ChatGPT users.

Mechanism Behind ChatGPT Work Learning Styles

To enable ChatGPT Work to emulate a user’s writing style, OpenAI requires individuals to connect their commonly used applications such as Gmail, Google Drive, Slack, and SharePoint. Once access is granted, the AI can analyse email communications and messages to glean insights into the user’s writing habits.

Although OpenAI has not disclosed the precise workings of this feature, it is presumed that natural language processing technology drives it. This process involves examining writing samples to identify patterns related to vocabulary, tone, and punctuation, thereby breaking down the text into smaller segments to better understand word choices and emotional nuances.

Through this analysis, ChatGPT Work can learn to replicate patterns that create the illusion of text authored by the user, enhancing the personal quality of the AI-generated content.

Availability and Competitors

The Writing Style feature is available on the web for all paid plans that include access to ChatGPT Work. Users can activate this feature through the web interface or the Settings menu under Personalisation options. This move by OpenAI follows similar initiatives by other AI developers, notably Anthropic, which previously introduced a Styles feature for its Claude AI tool.

Anthropic’s option allows users to upload writing samples to generate custom styles reflective of their communication patterns. Such developments indicate a competitive landscape in the AI space, with organisations striving to create more intuitive and human-like interactions.

The introduction of the Writing Style feature coincides with OpenAI’s recent launch of GPT-6 Astra, described as the company’s most formidable AI model to date. This has prompted industry experts, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, to label Astra as a significant advancement towards artificial general intelligence (AGI).
