The Adani Group has expressed interest in undertaking the renovation of Kolkata’s iconic Writers’ Building—also known as Mahakaran—marking a potential new chapter in the preservation of one of Bengal’s most significant administrative landmarks.

A delegation from the conglomerate recently visited the site along with officials from the Public Works Department, conducting a detailed inspection to assess structural conditions and evaluate the scope for restoration. Sources indicate that a comprehensive proposal may follow this preliminary survey.

Given the building’s immense historical and architectural importance, any renovation effort will be subject to strict heritage conservation norms. Authorities have emphasised that the façade, structural character, and original architectural style cannot be altered.

If approved, the project will proceed under expert supervision and in compliance with all regulatory frameworks governing heritage structures in Kolkata.

The proposed restoration aligns with the group’s broader expansion plans in the state. Earlier, “The Wall” reported the company’s proposal to build an IT-enabled hospital, Adani Arogya Mandir, in New Town.

Chairman Gautam Adani is scheduled to visit Kolkata on September 24, where he is expected to perform the Bhumipuja for the hospital project. Senior state leadership, including the Chief Minister, is likely to attend.

Speculation is also rife that Adani may formally announce the Writers’ Buildings renovation plan during this visit, although no official confirmation has been issued so far.

A building steeped in history

Constructed in 1777 and designed by architect Thomas Lyon, the Writers’ Buildings originally served as offices for junior clerks of the East India Company, known as “writers.” It later evolved into the administrative nerve center of Bengal.

The site also occupies a prominent place in India’s freedom struggle. On December 8, 1930, revolutionaries Binoy Basu, Badal Gupta, and Dinesh Gupta launched an attack on British official N.S. Simpson within the premises. In their honor, Dalhousie Square was later renamed B.B.D. Bagh.

For decades after independence, the sprawling 550,000-square-foot complex housed over 30 government departments and thousands of employees before administrative operations shifted to Nabanna in 2013.

Previous conservation work signals capability

The Adani Group has already been involved in heritage-linked development in the city. Through its port arm, it undertook the renovation of Kumartuli Ghat in collaboration with the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority.

The project included riverbank strengthening, improved walkways, lighting, and preservation of traditional structures, signaling the group’s approach to balancing modernization with heritage conservation.

Beyond CSR: Strategic cultural investment

Observers believe such initiatives go beyond traditional Corporate Social Responsibility. With most of its operations based outside West Bengal, the Adani Group appears to be investing not just in infrastructure but also in building cultural and public goodwill within the state.

A comparable effort was earlier seen when the Reliance Foundation undertook restoration work at the Kalighat Temple while preserving its heritage elements.

With the hospital groundbreaking, a visit to Kumartuli Ghat, and a potential announcement on the Writers’ Buildings all lined up, Gautam Adani’s upcoming Kolkata visit is being closely watched.

If the proposal materializes, it could inject long-awaited momentum into the restoration of Mahakaran—blending corporate investment with the preservation of Bengal’s historical legacy.
