US President Donald Trump has issued a firm warning to Canadian aerospace firm Bombardier, stating that the company must commence manufacturing its aircraft within the United States or face exclusion from the American market. This assertion was made in a post on Truth Social on September 5, 2026, amid rising tensions between the US and Canada over ongoing tariff disputes.

Trump’s declaration indicated that Bombardier would no longer be permitted to sell its jets in the US unless it shifted production to American soil. He criticises the quality of Bombardier’s products and contends that the company has treated the United States as a financial resource for long enough, stating, “NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES!”

This warning appears to stoke existing trade confrontations as Canada prepares to implement new retaliatory tariffs on US goods. These developments are reflective of Trump’s broader tariff policies and indicate a significant escalation in the trade dialogue between the two nations.

Ongoing Trade Tensions Between the US and Canada

The White House has yet to clarify how it might enforce this latest threat or whether it would have the authority to prevent Bombardier from operating within pre-approved frameworks set by the US Federal Aviation Administration. Moreover, Bombardier’s aircraft are encompassed by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which was established during Trump’s first term.

Experts suggest that customers of Bombardier are unlikely to cancel their orders despite Trump’s remarks. Industry analyst Richard Aboulafia indicated that the integration of the aerospace sectors between the US and Canada complicates the enforcement of such threats. He pointed out that a significant number of Bombardier’s business jets rely on American-made engines, illustrating the interlinked nature of the aerospace industries in both countries.

Unlike certain sectors grappling with tariffs, the aerospace industry has largely been unaffected thus far, permitting the continued movement of aircraft and components. The US Aerospace Industries Association reported a trade surplus of $109.2 billion within this sector, with a year-on-year export increase of 25% anticipated through 2025.

Bombardier’s American Operations and Market Significance

Based in Montreal, Bombardier currently employs approximately 3,500 individuals in the US and collaborates with around 2,800 American suppliers. Its operations include manufacturing wings for the Global 8000 business jet in Texas, alongside running multiple service centres across the country. The company is in the process of adding a sixth service centre in the US.

The US market is vital for Bombardier, with an estimated 50 per cent of the 5,100 aircraft operated by its clients located in the country. The American market’s significance is underscored by Bombardier’s extensive presence and operational capacity, which includes a defence division in Kansas that prepares Canadian-manufactured aircraft for specialised assignments.

In prior instances, Trump has directed criticism towards Bombardier. In January, he suggested the US would decertify Bombardier’s Global Express jets and threatened to impose high tariffs on Canadian-made aircraft unless the certification of Gulfstream models by Canada’s aviation authority was expedited. However, those threats did not lead to any actionable outcomes.

In a recent financial report, Bombardier indicated a 6% year-on-year increase in quarterly revenue, amounting to $2.15 billion, largely attributed to rising demand for its aftermarket services. As both Canada and the US evaluate potential further tariff measures, the dynamics of their trade relationship remain increasingly strained.
