Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde has announced the suspension and expulsion of the party’s Palghar city chief, Rahul Gharat. The decision follows Gharat’s alleged involvement in an assault on staff at a private hospital. Shinde characterised the incident as “extremely unfortunate” and underscored that grievances regarding medical treatment must be addressed through legal channels. He explicitly stated that there will be zero tolerance for assaults against medical professionals.

During a press briefing after participating in the Western Zonal Council meeting in Goa, Shinde reiterated the party’s stance against violent acts. “Assaulting doctors or other staff members is inappropriate, and the Shiv Sena will not condone such incidents,” he remarked, signalling a stern policy on issues affecting healthcare providers.

Police Action and Charges Filed

The situation escalated to a legal dispute when police recorded a case against 17 Shiv Sena functionaries, including Gharat himself. These individuals are charged with allegedly assaulting and threatening employees of Relief Hospital in Palghar. The incident reportedly originated from a disagreement over the medical bills of five individuals who were injured during Dahi Handi celebrations.

On the night of the incident, five participants – Omkar Kalwadkar, Akash Patil, Hitesh Chaudhari, Keshav Thakur, and Aniket Mahyavansh – were brought into the hospital after sustaining injuries from forming human pyramids. By midnight, their medical expenses had accumulated to Rs 19,866. While a companion of the injured paid Rs 10,000 in cash, the situation deteriorated when disagreements arose about the remaining payment.

According to police reports, around 1.15 am, a group of 15 to 20 people allegedly led by Gharat and another individual named Sankhe entered the casualty ward. Witnesses claim that they verbally abused an on-duty doctor and struck the receptionist, an individual named Babulinga. The group reportedly entered the intensive care unit, jeopardising the safety of admitted patients, and forcibly removed one of the injured victims.

Legal Framework for the Charges

The accused have been booked under various provisions, including the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Maharashtra Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property) Act. Charges against them encompass assault, criminal intimidation, trespass, and unlawful assembly, which indicate the serious nature of the allegations being investigated.

In light of these developments, Shinde’s prompt response highlights the Shiv Sena’s commitment to maintaining order and supporting healthcare professionals in Maharashtra. The party’s actions emphasise a broader recognition of the challenges faced by medical staff, particularly in high-pressure environments such as hospitals.
