“Petrol, Diesel and Domestic LPG Supply in Delhi Normal, Adequate”: CMO

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Chief Secretary of Delhi, Rajeev Verma, convened a high-level meeting on Saturday to address concerns regarding the supply of petrol, diesel, and domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the capital. According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the purpose of the meeting was to dispel rumors of disruptions in the LPG supply and affirm that sufficient stocks are available in Delhi.

Government’s Measures to Stabilize LPG Prices

Earlier in the day, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, noted that the government is absorbing a considerable portion of the increased costs to protect consumers. She explained that LPG deliveries are currently focused on the domestic sector, prioritizing essential services, including hospitals and educational institutions, for non-domestic LPG. The committee involved is working closely with state officials and industry representatives to finalize a fair distribution plan for the available LPG.

Impact of Global Events on Energy Prices

The situation follows the Centre’s announcement of a Rs 60 price hike for cooking LPG cylinders, triggered by the ongoing conflict in West Asia. As a result of this increase, the non-subsidised prices of LPG cylinders have reached Rs 913 in Delhi, Rs 939 in Kolkata, Rs 912 in Mumbai, and Rs 928 in Chennai. These price variations across states are attributed to the different taxes imposed by state governments.

New Regulations on LPG Refills Amid Supply Shortages

To address the emerging LPG shortage stemming from global energy supply disruptions, the Union government has instituted a new 25-day inter-booking period for domestic LPG refills. This action follows the invocation of the Essential Commodities Act, which aims to prioritize domestic LPG supply while limiting commercial distributions in various regions. The government’s approach reserves greater allocations for households, hospitals, and essential services.

Priority Supply Measures Implemented

The Petroleum Ministry has outlined a clear priority list for the distribution of natural gas in the wake of current supply challenges. Under this new directive, there is a guarantee of 100 percent supply for domestic piped gas to households and CNG for vehicles. These measures are intended to manage the constraints posed by the ongoing turmoil in the global energy market.
