When winter tightened its grip across North India, the cold turned nights into a struggle for survival for those living on the streets. With temperatures dipping sharply, countless homeless people were left exposed to the freezing conditions, many without even a blanket for warmth. In the middle of this harsh reality, an unexpected act of kindness from Pathankot, Punjab, has drawn attention for all the right reasons.
Raju, who earns his living by begging, chose not to look away from the suffering around him. Despite having no permanent shelter and barely enough for himself, he stepped forward to help people facing the same hardships. He launched a blanket distribution drive, arranging woolen blankets for those sleeping outdoors during the cold wave.
What sets Raju’s effort apart is how it was made possible. With no savings of his own, he went door to door collecting small donations. Often, people contributed as little as Rs 10. Through these modest contributions, Raju succeeded in arranging and distributing around 500 blankets to homeless and needy individuals, offering them some protection against the biting cold.
Warmth That Restored Hope
For many recipients, this initiative provided more than warmth it brought reassurance that someone cared. Nights that were once spent shivering on pavements and roadside shelters became slightly more bearable due to his efforts.
Raju says his motivation comes from faith and a sense of responsibility. Explaining why he continues despite his own struggles, he said, “God keeps making things happen, and I just keep doing my work.” He also shared that he believes helping those who approach him in need is a duty assigned to him by God.
This is not the first time Raju has been recognised for his selfless actions. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his work in supporting people in distress earned national appreciation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had mentioned and praised him during an episode of Mann Ki Baat, acknowledging his contribution to society during a difficult period.
Kind at Heart, Homeless Himself
Even as he helps others, Raju himself remains without a home. He has appealed to the government for a permanent house, stating that he currently has no place to live. His situation has moved many local residents, who have praised his compassion and urged others to learn from his example.
People in Pathankot say Raju’s story challenges common perceptions and shows that empathy does not depend on wealth or social standing. At a time when winter continues to test the most vulnerable, his actions stand as a reminder that humanity can shine even in the harshest conditions.
