One Dead, Nine Rescued After Building Collapse at Waste Management Plant Near Pune

The CSR Journal Magazine

A construction collapse at a waste management facility in Pimpri Chinchwad, close to Pune, resulted in one fatality, as confirmed by officials on Thursday. The incident occurred when a three-storey structure at a waste-to-energy plant gave way on the afternoon of July 8, 2026. Rescuers have launched a multi-agency initiative to find those who may still be trapped beneath the debris. So far, nine individuals have been successfully rescued from the site.

The deceased has been identified as Bhavesh Wani. After being extracted from the rubble, he was taken to Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital, where he was unfortunately pronounced dead upon arrival, as stated by hospital dean Rajendra Wable. The local authorities estimate that up to 18 individuals may have been trapped, although the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) put the figure at 23, indicating five people had already managed to escape prior to the arrival of rescue teams.

Rescue operations reported that seven individuals were saved within hours of the collapse, with an additional two rescued after midnight, bringing the total number of survivors to nine. An official from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) indicated that they suspect seven to eight more individuals are still unaccounted for beneath the rubble.

Conditions Complicate Rescue Efforts

Rescue teams face significant challenges in their operations due to the precarious nature of the collapsed structure. An NDRF official stated that two individuals have been spotted who appear to be immobile and seriously injured. The manual removal of debris is being employed chiefly to avoid further destabilisation caused by heavy machinery operations, which could exacerbate the situation and endanger other potential survivors.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Ganesh Ingale confirmed that the rescue mission remains active, focusing on locating and extracting any remaining individuals trapped within the fallen building. Rescuers are working diligently, coordinating efforts from multiple agencies, including the Indian Army, the municipal fire brigades, and police forces.

Moreover, employees of Antony Lara Renewable Energy, which operates the 14-MW waste-to-energy plant in partnership with the PCMC, have been identified among those who were trapped in the structure at the time of the collapse. The ongoing search operation reflects a serious commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind.

Investigation and Future Precautions

The PCMC has declared that the search and rescue operation is proceeding on a “war footing.” Municipal Commissioner Vijay Suryawanshi commented that the building was situated adjacent to a significant pile of legacy waste. Reports indicate that heavy rain may have contributed to the destabilisation of this waste, leading to a landslide that caused the building’s collapse.

Authorities are actively involved in continuing their efforts to clear the area manually. Their focus remains on ensuring any individuals still feared trapped beneath the collapsed structure are reached as swiftly and safely as possible. The situation is being monitored very closely to prevent additional accidents that could further jeopardise the rescue teams and any potential survivors.

As the rescue efforts are ongoing, community members and local officials are expressing their solidarity with the affected families, highlighting the need for thorough investigations in the aftermath of the tragic incident to improve safety measures at similar facilities in the future.
