The CSR Journal Magazine

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan emphasized the importance of Kerala’s healthcare infrastructure as a standard for others during the inauguration of the Silver Jubilee building complex at E.M.S Memorial Co-operative Hospital in Perinthalmanna. He reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing the public healthcare system, ensuring that every citizen has access to quality medical services.

Focus on Public Healthcare System

During his address, Vijayan pointed out a concerning trend of private hospitals being acquired by multinational corporations. In light of this, he mentioned that the Kerala government has taken necessary measures to revamp the healthcare framework. The Chief Minister highlighted a notable achievement: Kerala has successfully lowered its neonatal mortality rate to 5%. He made a comparison with the United States, where the rate stands at 5.6%, illustrating the state’s progress in maternal and child health.

Commitment to Universal Healthcare

Vijayan firmly stated that the state’s policy is that no one should miss out on medical treatment due to financial difficulties. He reiterated that prioritizing the public healthcare system is a crucial aspect of the government’s strategy to ensure equitable access to medical services for all citizens.

Role of Co-operative Hospitals

Furthermore, the Chief Minister highlighted the crucial contributions of co-operative hospitals to Kerala’s healthcare landscape. He noted the evolution of E.M.S Memorial Co-operative Hospital into a significant entity within the co-operative sector, underscoring its role in the broader commitment to accessible and quality healthcare services.

Affirmation of Transportation Development Project

In a related development, the Chief Minister took the opportunity to express gratitude to Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for showing a positive disposition towards the proposed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project in Kerala. This communication occurred following a meeting at an urban conclave in Kochi last year, where the subject was discussed.

Approval for RRTS Proposal

In his letter, Vijayan informed that the Kerala State Cabinet granted in-principle approval for the RRTS proposal on January 28. He appraised Khattar about the implications of the RRTS project for the state’s sustainable transport strategy, especially considering Kerala’s distinct urban and demographic characteristics.

Importance of Sustainable Mobility Strategy

Vijayan referenced their earlier meeting at the Urban Conclave, held on September 12, 2025, in Kochi, during which the minister’s willingness to explore the RRTS proposal was acknowledged. He attached a Conceptual Note related to the RRTS project and reiterated its significance for fostering long-term sustainable mobility in the state.

Unique Urban and Demographic Context

The Chief Minister concluded his communication by illustrating Kerala’s unique urban landscape and demographic challenges, emphasizing the necessity of adopting a robust mobility solution to address these issues effectively.
