Kerala’s Higher Education Minister, Roji M John, has emphasised the importance of maintaining independent thought and constitutional values within educational institutions. He stated that it is inappropriate for university leaders to align with organisations that pursue divisive agendas. This statement was made in a Facebook post on the occasion of Teachers’ Day. John expressed that such actions compromise the dignity associated with the roles of these leaders.

Tensions Between Government and University Administration

The minister’s comments come amidst ongoing tensions between the Kerala state government and Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, who serves as the chancellor of universities in the state. Disagreements have surfaced regarding various matters, including the appointment of vice-chancellors and the selection of Senate members. The situation became even more contentious recently when certain vice-chancellors participated in an RSS programme featuring its chief, Mohan Bhagwat, in June.

John remarked that it is unbecoming of university heads to forget the integrity of their positions by engaging with platforms promoting divisive agendas. He argued that such behaviour undermines academic autonomy and the core values of education. The minister reiterated that institutions of higher learning should ideally serve as bastions of independent thought.

Previously, John had reproached the participating vice-chancellors for failing to uphold an image of academic and administrative neutrality. He reiterated that this stance is not just a matter of personal preference but a critical aspect of their duties. Moreover, John pointed to the need for education to transcend narrow political influences, thus preserving the essence of both education and teaching.

Reflections on Teachers’ Day

In his message for Teachers’ Day, John called upon educators to embrace their vital role in fostering generations that embody humanity and equality. He invoked the legacy of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, India’s second President, whose birthday is celebrated as Teachers’ Day in recognition of his contributions to education.

John’s comments highlighted renowned educators such as Rabindranath Tagore, APJ Abdul Kalam, Sukumar Azhikode, ONV Kurup, MGS Narayanan, and Prof M Leelavathy. These educators have inspired students to dream, question, and develop critical thinking skills. Through their work, they have demonstrated the transformative power of education and its role in nurturing independent minds.

Addressing incidents of caste-based humiliation faced by students, the minister expressed disappointment over those who resort to derogatory practices. He remarked that such actions reveal an alarming failure to comprehend the true essence of teaching. He stressed that educators hold the responsibility of shaping compassionate individuals in the classroom environment.
