Netanyahu Orders Increased Military Action in Lebanon Following Capture of Beaufort Castle

The CSR Journal Magazine

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has directed the military to intensify operations in Lebanon against the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group. This announcement was made on Sunday, despite a ceasefire that has been in place for over six weeks. The conflict, which escalated significantly after Hezbollah initiated rocket and drone attacks on Israel in early March, has resulted in substantial casualties and displacement in Lebanon.

Reports indicate that Israeli airstrikes and evacuation orders have led to the displacement of over 1.2 million people in Lebanon since March 2. According to Lebanese government sources, the ongoing violence has claimed the lives of more than 3,370 individuals. In contrast, Israel has reported the deaths of 24 soldiers and four civilians during this period, while tens of thousands of Israelis in northern regions have also been forced to evacuate due to Hezbollah’s attacks.

The recent military operation has successfully secured control of the historic Beaufort Castle, a site of strategic importance, along with a ridge in southern Lebanon. This move follows one of the most intense days of fire from Hezbollah towards northern Israel since the ceasefire began, leading to school closures and a tightening of restrictions in those areas.

International Response to Escalating Violence

In light of the escalating situation, France has called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council. The French foreign ministry shared this information, highlighting international concerns regarding the ongoing violence and its implications for regional stability.

Since the ceasefire in mid-April, exchanges of fire have persisted between Israeli forces and Hezbollah. The militant group has adopted the use of inexpensive, easily assembled kamikaze drones, which pose significant challenges to Israeli air defences, having resulted in casualties among Israeli troops.

The Israeli military aims to expand its control further into Lebanon, targeting areas previously under Hezbollah’s influence. Netanyahu stated that the objective is to deepen Israel’s hold in regions that have historically been controlled by the militant group, indicating a strategic shift in military policy. The military has also issued evacuation warnings for residents south of the Zaharani River amidst ongoing air operations.

Strategic Importance of Beaufort Castle

The recent capture of Beaufort Castle has provided Israeli troops with a strategic advantage over significant parts of southern Lebanon and northern Israel, facilitating their military operations. This marked the first time Israel has maintained control of the castle since its withdrawal from southern Lebanon in May 2000, ending an 18-year military presence in the area.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has confirmed that the military intends to retain control over Beaufort as part of Israel’s security perimeter in southern Lebanon. He reiterated the commitment to combat Hezbollah’s capabilities, emphasising that the campaign against the group is far from finished. A photo circulated on social media showing the Israeli flag over the castle, symbolising military achievements against Hezbollah, has raised significant attention.

The operation aims to assert control over the Beaufort Ridge and the Wadi al-Saluki area, while also degrading Hezbollah’s military strength and infrastructure established under Iranian guidance. Reports indicate that at least one Israeli soldier has been killed during this latest operation. While responses from Lebanese officials or Hezbollah representatives have yet to emerge, the situation continues to develop amidst ongoing military engagements.
